A trip to Iloilo wouldn't be complete if one doesn't walk along J.M. Basa St. or more famously known as Calle Real (Royal Street) since the Spanish era. This heritage zone is the old business district and main shopping hub of the city. It is the home of neoclassical, art deco and beaux arts structures mostly built in the 1920's. It's a really nostalgic feeling walking along this street.
the streets of the old rich and hacienderos of IloIlo ...love the buildings of yesteryears...well preserved area...
When I go back home to Iloilo, like this past month, I still like walking and shopping along Calle Real. This is the main shopping hub when I was growing up in the city. It is Nostalgic for me. I still shop at Commoner and the Socorro Pharmacy right at the junction and Iznart and Jam Baza Streets. I still like to go to Central Market. Calle Real is crowded, the diesel fumes from the jeepneys are almost suffocating and the noise is high level (also from the jeepneys) but it still feels like the heart of the city for me. A pity that many buildings are still looking dilapidated, sad considering that the other side of the city, (Megawold) looks quite posh. The electric wires certainly add to the sense of chaos and the run-down look of the streets. The city government should really do something about it. They have done a lot in improving much of the city. With the improvement of the Muelle Loney area, the Calle Real should look much better now.
the old commercial district of the place but still triving with all stores still there, its the downtown center of the city.
Calle Real was during Spanish Era the most famous commercial street in Iloilo. The name of the street is now J.M. Basa Street
.In 1940-50s street had top class shopping outlets selling American and European products.
On Calle Real are many neoclassic and art deco buildings.
Now they are in bad condition although some renewal is going on. Now Calle Real belongs Iloilo City Heritage Zone.
There are still many shops in those old buildings.
I love looking at the old buildings in this area. I also love to go to two of the great eateries here - KongKee Chinese Restaurant and Roberto's is located. This is the heart of historical old Iloilo
