Sambawan Island is considerably a virgin when it comes to tourism. There's no electricity but decent water supply is available.
Overnight camping is encouraged for those who are up for it.
Sambawan offers one of the clearest and cleanest waters in the area, housing hundreds of species which you can easily see and interact with while snorkeling near the shore.
A little trek with effort will bring you on top of the one of the mountains in the island which take away your breath for the wonderful view.
Don't leave Leyte without visiting Sambawan, Maripipi.
Sambawan is an incredibly beautiful little island, and I almost feel like I don't want to review it because I don't want other people to know. But it left such a mark on me that I'm compelled to tell others about it.
The island is a 45-min local fisherman boat ride from Almeria, Biliran. We didn't need to call ahead or reserve anything and we were actually worried we wouldn't get a ride because the dock looked empty. But as soon as our car approached, a representative came and told us all we needed to know. We packed our own food for our overnight stay but we bought ice for our coolers at a local store near the dock. One thing we loved about leaving from Almeria was we were allowed to park our car at the police station lot, so we knew it was going to be safe.
Sambawan itself is breathtaking. There are a lot of things to do on the beach - swim, snorkel, kayak. Or you could hike to the top for one of the most amazing views of your life (promise!). It's not a strenuous hike at all, if you're relatively fit, it would take you less than 8 minutes to the top. I am an avid snorkeler and I found the fish there to be satisfactory. A huge one up for me was the beach being so close to a reef, where there was plenty to see.
We were lucky enough to be there when it wasn't busy. A huge group retreat was just concluding when we arrived and we practically had the place to ourselves (2-3 other groups, but still!) My group of 4 stayed the night in one of their huts, which was basic but clean. Falling asleep with the cool ocean breeze and the sound of the waves was pretty awesome.
Overall, I don't think Sambawan is touristy at all... especially compared to Kalanggaman (which I visited right after). Again, I want to keep this place a secret for fear of spoiling its charm! That said, you should definitely go and admire its beauty.
This is a must see place in Leyte. They have the magnificent view of Mt Marikiki. Activities include snorkling diving and trekking. Very impressed with management. I suggest you stay overnight or 2 days. They have fan nipa huts that can fit 2 to 8 people. Canteen available in the island but costly. You can contact travel and tours "3KR travel and tours". The best tour and travel that can take care of you. You will never regret it.
From Maripipi, you'd have to endure a long boat ride. It was probably more than two hours. Along the way, you'll see a few interesting-looking, small islands. However, once you reach the island, you'll know it's all worth it!
There are a couple of huts and tables by the beach, but they are too pricey. You don't really need to rent one if you're just going to swim and hike the whole day. The food offered by the restaurant there is also a bit pricey, so I suggest you bring your own.
The sand is fine and white (although not so fine as the sand in Kalanggaman Island or in Boracay). The water is clear and blue and is shallow in some parts. Swimming isn't the only thing you can do here. You can climb to the top of the hill--it's a long climb, but the view of the sea and of the neighboring islands is a great payoff.
We came here to Sambawan during a 3 days tour of Biliran. The hilltop place have a great picturesque view of Maripipi and the whole island. This island has a similar structure of Isla Gigantes in Ilo-ilo.
You have to bring you own food if you are planning to stay overnight. Also, bring your own water. There are cottages that you can rent for about Php 2500 good for 6 people. The cottage has tap water with free 200 liters. Be careful not to exceed the limit since the charge is expensive. Luckily, we did not exceed ours.
Upon arrival at noon Saturday we were enthralled as there was NOBODY but a few workers there. Later in the afternoon quite a few boats showed up, and some stayed overnight. The bungalow was 1500P per night and VERY rustic. Electricity from 6 to 6 Some other overnight guests got drunk and got loud, as drunks tend to do.
About the diving; viz was soso, corals good, biomass soso. Strong currents. Saw no other divers (a big +). After drifting, our boat disappeared and I had to swim almost a kilometer to shore and get another boat to rescue my girlfriend (they divemaster waited out in the channel with her).
