Whale Shark Tour

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 28, 2023via mobile
I would usually wait till the end to review a hotel but this hotel is so amazing. We have been blown away with the fabulous service and need to share our experience of the whale shark tour with a final review of the hotel to follow.

We arrived as a family of 15 from Australia and London and plantation bay has been pure luxury from the moment we stepped off the plane. It is easily one of the best hotels and experiences of top quality service of our lives.

The Whale Shark tour is a once in a lifetime bucket list experience where you will have the VIP service from beginning to end. Our driver Geoff was very skilled and fast and could go places I would never go without scratching the car and our tour guide Aliana was so thoughtful and amazing she kept going above and beyond, she made the experience very special. I highly recommend it.

You leave at 4am to travel the 3-4 hours to Oslob at the bottom of Cebu island. They get you there in the morning not long after it opens but the bedlam and queue at the sharks is crazy, like nothing I’ve experienced. People are queuing down the road for miles including obvious instagrammers from all countries and nationalities and this is around 7am.

But if you are on the Plantation Bay tour you never queue. You are driven to a separate VIP area in the shade by the beach with a private table and chairs and given fruit and drinks as our beautiful tour guide Aliana sorted out our place in the queue. To get an idea of how busy it was we arrived around 7am and our queue number was about 350.

After our place and time for the sharks was established and we were briefed on the whale shark experience (ie don’t wear sunscreen, keep a fair distance between yourself and the shark). We were driven to a drop off point for Tumalog Falls where motorcycles zip you to the base of the falls.

This was so exciting for my children. We were each given a different person and wizzed down to the most majestic falls and lagoon where you can swim up to waterfall and take a picture. The water is so cold and we wished we had brought water shoes as it was quite stoney, but such an amazing experience.

The water is mineralized from the rock and you can tell it is really good for your skin. We then sat in a rock pool where tiny fish can nibble on your toes like a fish spa in nature.

We were then returned to our lovely spot on the beach and served a Filipino BBQ lunch of delicious BBQ pork skewers, BBQ prawns and fish and beers and soft drinks.

We felt like royalty. Aliana really gave us the five star treatment we did not wait at all just rested and enjoyed the scenery.

At around 2pm it was our turn and we were taken to a place to have our life vest assigned and Aliana magically produced snorkels for us all.

We were put in a traditional Filipino boat and taken to the whale sharks. There were also sea turtles swimming around. You are then told to get in the water and hold onto the boat as a man feeds the sharks to lead them past you. We saw many whale sharks up close. It’s a definite once in a lifetime experience.

I know it’s controversial as some people believe this is bad for the sharks but I only saw happy sharks getting fed and a community earning much needed money.

Once the whale shark experience was over Aliana met us on the beach and took us back to our private area where towels, soap, body wash, and lotions were laid out and we were given a place to shower with changing rooms.

We were then taken back to our car to sleep nearly all the way home. We had a quick stop at a shop where we could buy chicheron, a pork crackling originating from Cebu.

A perfect day. I wanted to tip both Aliana and Geoff as their service was the most wonderful I have ever experienced. I continually tried in many ways but Aliana constantly refused and stated again and again about the no tipping policy of the hotel. It was so incredibly kind of them to provide such amazing service with no expectation of a tip which made it all so much more special.

Plantation Bay is a beautiful place to stay but I would stay also just to be able to do this amazing tour. It is one of my best experiences to date.

Six years ago, my family and I had a delightful experience at Plantation Bay in Mactan, Cebu. The staff were exceptionally helpful, and there was an abundance of mostly free activities. However, our recent visit was marred by a drastic decline in service quality and overall experience.

The most striking issue was the staff's attitude. They were consistently surly, often appearing irritated, and even engaged in arguments and shouting at guests for using mobile phones. While I understand the intent behind restricting mobile use, the execution was poorly handled and overly aggressive. For instance, while using a workout app in the gym, I was rudely interrupted by staff, despite the gym's TV loudly playing CNN. This contrasts sharply with the serene environment we once enjoyed.

The decline extended to dining experiences as well. Despite the high cost of staying at Plantation Bay, breakfast was a chaotic scene. Guests had to endure long waits, only to find scarce food options once inside. This was particularly disappointing considering the resort's multiple idle kitchens during breakfast hours.

Furthermore, amenities that were free during our last visit, like kayaks and paddle boards, now came with a hefty fee. The once enjoyable water slides were closed, with no explanation given, suggesting long-term neglect.

Even simple tasks like hailing a taxi were problematic. We were misled by staff about additional taxi charges, a claim easily disproved by our own experience.

Our experience at the resort's Spanish Tapas/Italian restaurant, Palermo, was equally frustrating. The dishes were excessively sweet, and when we sent them back, they were returned with unconvincing explanations about alterations made to the recipes.

Overall, Plantation Bay has undergone a disappointing transformation. The once welcoming and vibrant resort now feels aloof and poorly managed. Every aspect of our stay was overshadowed by issues in customer care and guest experience, marking a significant and unfortunate departure from the quality we remembered.

Let me get to the point. The facilities are great. The Jacuzzi experience in Mogambo spring was refreshing and the staff was accommodating & attentive.

Food in Fiji restaurant is terrible. Their 4pcs tempura was priced at P1480 was overcooked, too salty and too messy to eat— its tempura bits were everywhere each time you take a bite. It was even served with a food flag captioned as “Worlds Best Tempura”, oh well. When you dine in Fiji, you’d be so confuse. Their logo is in safari theme, some of their staff wears safari uniform, the restaurant interior is like a log cabin, but the food they serve is in japanese and some random food cuisine that tastes I dont know. The chicken in the carenderia tastes way better than their P680 chicken. Hehe

And the worst part of our main stay was that the ac works like fan. Now i get it why they never bother to upgrade their sheets to comforter for an 11k per night room, because they know how warm their old ac’s are actually working. I thought i’d be more happy & satisfied to sleep in my own room at home. Trust me. And yes, they don't have bidets.

You can hear the walking of the guests in the 2nd floor even at 2am. That means, no sound proofing was even installed in the first place. Goodbye 11k per night I just paid for a complete stay of inconvenience.

By the way, your every move inside the hotel is being watched like a hawk and every move is with a corresponding additional payment. They don't have complimentary room slippers. What they have are beach/toilet slippers that they sell inside the room for an additional P100, room service is additional P300. Now I understand why this place survived through the years.

Very rude staff at Kilimanjaro Restaurant. Worst experience ever. I would never come back here. Strongly not recommended. I feel so humiliated with what the staff did. I was lying in the lounger under the shade to relax and this waitress told me to transfer to the side. There was enough space on the side to walk on.

Room tip: Find another resort.

This resort is not worth of the price. The hype of this place is unreal. Every corner needs renovation. The pool or they call it lagoon is full of mildew. They will give you a coupon to get 2 towels! You are only allowed to get 2 towels! Mind you, the towels are thin and cheap! You have to bring back the towels to get the 2 coupon towels back. So cheap huh? The bathroom in the room is very outdated! They need to polish the bathroom faucets or just blow up the entire bathroom to get it renovated. The restaurants are too pricey! Food and customer service was very lame! Hospitality of the staff needs to step up. People look so unhappy working there.
To end this, I don’t know why talking on the phone was not allowed in the restaurant. Some people just want to come up with ridiculous rules. I will not come back to this place and I do not recommend this to anybody.

Room tip: Not a good place to stay

I don't know where to start. First of all, the price of this place is not worth it. My wife and I stayed for 2 nights/3 days. We decided to stay here after all the hype and good reviews. With so much expectation, my wife and I were both disappointed. Everything is outdated! Starting from the lobby, their sitting couches looked very dirty. And that already gave me the first sign. When I entered our room, a fly and mosquitoes are already present. Giving the benefit of the doubt, there's a French door going to the back patio. So it's fine! The whole entire room only have one garbage. You have to go to the bathroom every time you throw something away. They need to clean the bathroom much better like making the bathroom faucets shiny. To make this experience worse, I saw a little rat under the bathroom sink In the middle of the night. I told the front desk and manager Aaron the next day about it and they told me that I should have informed them right away. He said they could have given me a new room. Who would transfer rooms at 2am?
The restaurants have ridiculous rules. We were not allowed to talk on the phone while inside the restaurant. I was confused for a moment, I thought I went to a library and not a restaurant. Food was not that good and service was lame.
Lastly, I was so disappointed with the lagoon. The floor was very slimy and the water is dirty. I was only in the water for thirty minutes. We were only allowed to get 2 thin cheap towels. With the price of this hotel, they couldn't provide a good quality towels!
To end this review, do not waste your money coming here. With my experience on this trip, this was a nightmare!
