Good venue but.......

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 20, 2019via mobile
After attending a wedding recently held at Makati Shang's Rizal ballroom, I notice a glaring problem with this 5 star hotel venue. Enumerated are the following:

1. One of our companions seated on our table accidentally tipped over his water into the lazy Susan table. The servers saw what happened but did not bother to help clean the table. We tried to call on of the waiters but it seems they did not care and just walked away. The table was left wet throughout the 4 hour event. They still serve the food and placed it in the wet area. We are surprised that they did not bother to clean it.

2. The waiters and staff seems out sync, unmotivated, spaced out and does not know what to do. They did not bother to refill the water on our table when they are already empty. We need to call them again and again just to get their attention.

3. The dish plate that was replaced throughout the night seems not the cleanest plate. There are some dirt on the newly replaced plates. I was astounded that this happened here.

Review for the food. Tip: avoid their chinese lauriat option.

1st dish - Suckling Pig Combination -

since our companion accidentally spilled his water on the table (see above), unfortunately the dish was also affected. I am unable to give a fair assessment of the taste. The dish is wet while being served. The waiters let the guest (me) to wipe off the wet table.

2nd dish- Double boiled chicken cordyceps soup with whole abalone, black mushroom and wolfberries.

The taste is so-so. I think the soup lacks the flavor I am looking for. It is somehow bland

3rd dish - sauteed fresh scallops in asparagus xo sauce served in taro basket.

Scallops lacks flavor and it's quite bland. Asapagrus is so so. Some of it is like flossing while chewing due to the vegetable being old?.. Taro basket was full of flavor to the point of being salty. While the scallop and asparagus lacks the right saltiness, the taro basket was really salty that you need to put the sauce to mitigate the saltiness (sauce is served w/o serving spoon, you need to pour the sauce directly to your plate and leave the residue on the cup dripping while you put it back to the table).

4th dish - steamed lobster with ginger and scallions.

One word: mushy

5th dish - baked cod fillet in egg white sauce

The cod is tender but has quite oily texture. Maybe it is just like that? I like it

6th dish - sauteed beef cubes in black pepper sauce

Tender beef and good taste. The beef was cooked well. I think the chef has applied the black pepper sauce quite liberally. The black pepper taste is really overpowering. You'll get that black pepper burning sensation on your taste bud. Some people like it some people not. I personally like it.

7th dish - Lotus Leaves Fried Rice and preserved sausage

Meh.. ongpin serves better.

8th dish - Creme Catalan, Flourless chocolate cake and salted caramel icecream.

Of all the dishes that was served, this one they are able to get it right. Enjoyed their dessert.

Conclusion:
Makati shang does not serve good Chinese lauriat. Better stick with other cuisines or offerings. Staff are not attentive and seems unmotivated to work.

stayed here for 2 nights with my husband, hotel was nice, opulent lobby, our room was nice and big, bit dated/old, bed was comfortable, service was nice, pool was great, we had an incident where they tried to over charge us when checking out (it was resolved but good thing we always double check our bill), because of the incident we won't be staying in this hotel in the future.

As soon as you enter this hotel you don't feel like you are in the buzzling City of Metro Manila. Suddenly it gets really Relaxing and if you dont look out of the window you could think you are back in Europe. The Service was really great and our room was good too. Of Course it's not as modern as other 5 star Hotels in Manila, but even the style of the room was a Little bit outdated we still enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for your hospitality!

I stayed here for four days and enjoyed the experience. It's centrally-placed and the hotel is well laid-out. My room was comfortable, if pretty standard international hotel; nice to have fresh fruit in the room every day though. I enjoyed the breakfast - a good mix of menus from across the world although sometimes the staff seemed very busy - coffee offered but not delivered etc. Also, they have the weird (and to me at least, mildly disgusting) practice of clearing the plate but leaving the dirty cutlery behind. That said a good stay.

I had a beautiful room which was large and spacious with a beautiful bathroom, large tub and a great shower. Bed was so comfortable. Breakfast was amazing with too many options to choose from, loved the sushi bar and pastries, egg station could be better. Also the lunch buffet was great with everything you could imagine. Vegetarian options could be increased (I’m not vegetarian myself but colleagues who are, had very limited options). I was there for a week long conference and the catering was impeccable with the friendliest staff always helping out and preparing coffee. The hotel is conveniently located close to many shopping malls within walking distance. Limo service to and from the airport was also great. Everyone is so very friendly and helpful, they arranged for me to checkout two hours late with no additional charge.
