If you like boats or just want to learn more about transport and life around the Tsugaru strait, be sure to visit. There is information on both the Seikan ferries and life around Tsugaru in general. You can visit a lot of the ship, from the smokestack to the captains bridge and the cargo hold with historical trains. Sadly you can't enter any of the trains. They also show a video about the Tsugaru strait ferries which is pretty easy to understand even with limited Japanese skills.

This ferry is now a museum that tells the story of 100 years of sea transport between Hokkaido. There are dioramas of life in Aomori as well as a well planned route through various parts of the ship including the train deck with carriages. The museum does not have any english translations of the exhibits which is a shame, but the pictures and other displays tells the story quite well.

The Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkodamura is an amazing time capsule of Aomori life. There are life scenes all through the boat.

The ship permanently moored to the dock rocks gently as you explore from the highest point in the exhaust stack on top to the lowest parts of the massive engine room. The remaining train and carriages in the hold show how products and people were transported in the recent past.

The memorial ship is just a short walk from the Aomori Train Station. The ship used to be a ferry but was retired when the train line to Hokkaido was built. Lots of history in this museum to remind you of life in Aormori many years ago and the harships due to the cold winters. Lots of glorious old photos and diorama take you back to yesteryear and how the locals lived Visit the bridge / control room of the ship and feel what it's like to navigate the ship and enjoy the view. If you are mechanically inclined, you MUST visit the engine room in the basement and see the 4 large exposed engines each with 16 cylinders. Amazing. Great way to spend half a day.

Thank Seb I
