There is no guide or explanation given to Westerners at this site. We arrived at around 3pm on a dark and rainy day. The atmosphere was very solemn. The monuments are very large and very old. Nature is beginning to reclaim the area. It might lose the mystery on a sunny day, but for a day with less than pleasant weather this sight will leave you with compelling memories. It would be nice if a greater explanation could be left for Western visitors to educate more about Buddhist practices.

Follow the path up the hill from the Kanmangafuchi Abyss and you come across the Graves of the Self-Immolation. According to the Nikko Historical Walking map, there are 24 gravestones - five of those who died were retainers of the 3rd Tokugawa Iemitsu Shogun and the other 19 were "vassals who devoted themselves to the Tokugawa shogunate." They died on April 20, 1651.
A graveyard doesn’t sound the most exciting place to be, but it is very atmospheric and tranquil - and I don't think I've seen so many shades of green in one place!
