Owner description: The Hakone Sekisho (Checkpoint) was one of the most important and famous Sekisho throughout Japan. The Sekisho officials carried out severe inspection of travelers especially women between 1619 and 1868. The Hakone Sekisho was perfectly restored in 2007.

This is a great reproduction of what it was like for traveling people coming into this area. It's like an old fashion imagratation center. The men and women were completely checked out and vetted. Also some nice shopping to be had.

Definitely a must-see place if you happen to be in the area and love history! If you are hakone passholder, show your pass to the staff and get 10% discount of entry ticket.
The site is small, you have two opposite gates literally, once you pass the first one, you have 2 sides to explore.
What is great from this site is that there are numbered signpost to mark which part to look first. From horse stable, custom checkpoint counter to small prison and well, you won't get lost (if you do I'd be surprised).
I took a picture of me sitting inside the prison, they allow you to as long as you take off your shoes. Then, you can climb up the 69 stairs to check the watch guard post. Be sure you are healthy and fit tho, the stairs itself is well maintained and equipped with hand-rail so it's safe.
The view is amazing from above, you get the lake, the mountain and the surrounding area.
The site is also adjacent with various gift shops and eateries, so don't worry, you have plenty things to do after your visit to this checkpoint or while waiting to board the cruise.
It was a 45min well spent, I was happy that I made the visit.

Hakone's ancient claim to fame was its location as a choke hold on the north-south highway. The outpost is now a museum. Good for a quick look.

Museum exhibition requires additional top-up on top of your Hakone Freepass. We decided to just walkthru it so it was nothing much. This area is just 5 mins away from Hakone-machiko pier stop. Once pass this, do go thru the ancient cedar avenue which takes only 20 mins stroll towards Moto-Hakone pier stop.
Because there are lack of english signages here, do ask around as Japanese people are happy to help :)

The gate was in use just 150 years ago up to the end of Edo era...this was not my family's final destination; but it was quite interesting and informative even for those occasionally come to Hakone like us. The watchman' booth - the stairs to get to are 69, requiring a little bit of exercise. I wish that we could have come on sunny day when we should be able to have a nice Mt. Fuji view over the lake.
