“Another samurai warrior statue next to Kofu JR station”

Takeda Shingen Statue
Reviewed 22 September 2017

Although a large and somewhat imposing statue, that's all it is. There are many similar memorials to all sorts of feudal warlords and this was pretty much just one like all the rest.

Takeda Shingen is my favorite warlord of the feudal times of Japan. This man was a brilliant strategist. He could have been the one to start the process of uniting Japan, instead of Oda Nobunaga. But, his ambition was cut short from getting syphilis from one of his concubines. His province was Kofu. I heard of a statue of him being outside of the train station, so I went and saw it.

The Takeda Shingen statue is a prominent landmark in Kofu as it stands alongside the train station, taxi rank and bus terminus. Thus, most who pass through Kofu see this memorial. Recently, a smart car park has been added to the rear of the statue..

But that is all it is...OK it isn't really little, it is fairly substantial, and has the same characterful rather than formal nature which is most notable in the statute of Saigo Takamori in Ueno Park, but it isn't a destination as such.

But given it is right outside the station in the heart of town, if you are visiting Kofu you'll be seeing it whether you want to or not!
