OK Japan is stuffed full of temples and I wouldn't pretend this is the best, however it is worth a trip from town if you fancy a nice hour wind down and relax as you take in the architecture and the lovely surrounding gardens and setting. The views to the mountains beyond make this quite the urban retreat. If in a more rural area this would get three stars but given its situation in urban Kofu and the lack of similar in the area it gets a bonus one.
The 16th century main building exudes ancient character, with Hello Kitty in the entrance only highlighting the fact that you must be in 21st century Japan. For a small fee you can take in the echoing main hall and the very dark maze at the heart of the building - entry into it is suppose to make you reborn.
A great little side trip if you like the traditional.
