We stayed a couple of nights at the Ryokan Sugimoto to experience this part of Japanese hospitality. As you'd expect, the service is outstanding and discreet, the rooms were comfortable (in the Japanese minimalist style) and the onsen was small and well maintained. The food is the real point however, a high-end multi-course meal each night and only slightly less extravagant at breakfast although not for the faint-hearted! It's expensive and if budget was stretched, one night would be enough, but well worth trying especially if it is your first time in Japan. The Ryokan is on the outskirts of Matsumoto but easy to get into town on the bus. Throw yourself into it and you will love it.

If I could give Ryokan Sugimoto more than 5 stars I would. We spent 2 nights here and were amazed by the experience - the staff were lovely and spoke English as much as they could (which we did not expect!), the rooms were large, quiet and beautifully clean and the food was outstanding. Our room came with a private onsen style bath. The dinner consisted of a huge number of small courses which alone make the price of the accommodation well worth it - you would not be served better quality food and as much at any restaurant. Breakfast was also delicious and fresh. We even got to see the chef making soba noodles. This really was a lifetime experience and for travellers who want a traditional Japanese experience I definitely recommend staying here!

If you calculate the worth of the fantastic dinner (and breakfast, and onsen!) this is not expensive. The onsen is beautiful (inside and outside) and the room was a real ryokan room. Perfect service. Can't believe there were no more tourists!

my family of 4 had a most memorable stay marked by the excellent kaiseki, warm & impeccable service and cozy facilities.
when we couldn't finish our mushroom rice, the staff thoughtfully packed them into individually wrapped rice balls and delivered to our room, with pickles, for our supper.
The onsen facilities though small, has both indoor and outdoor and is well stocked with different types of shampoo and skin -care that will surely delight the ladies.
and we loved the foot bath in front of the lovely zen garden.

A charming house nested in a quiet street
Very tastefully decorated classic Japanese room with a smoking, drinking place overlooking the patio
A beautiful wood bath in the room with a delicate cedar fragrance
The Onsen water is very nice and make you feel good instantly
In the patio, you can rest after the bath on deck chairs while having a cool drink with your feet in onsen water
The restaurant that you reach through an underground path is very beautiful and we add a room dedicated for ourselves
The food is outstanding
The bar is stocked with a plentitude of single malts and an audiophile system (jbl 4343 with an upgraded outer filter) distilled a rich sounding jazz piece

It is a wonderful place which is very hard to fault
