“Lovely walk - but hot”

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

A great walk all around the ramparts of the Old Fort town. Great views of both town and the sea. Very hot and busy, but a must do. Also great view of the International cricket ground.

What a history lesson. Facinating piece of history with so many boutique bars, restaurants and hotels wish we had more tome to explore fully but highly recommended as a must see in Sri Lanka.

Galle is quite different from everything else you might see in Sri Lanka, thus is worth a visit.
It is an old fort built by the Dutch. The Dutch and British inheritance can be seen and felt everywhere in the old town: the fortifications, the narrow streets, the churches, the buildings, it's like you walk in another country.
The old buildings are very well maintained and this is done with the generous contribution of the Dutch government that finances the maintenance of old Galle.
The old town is rather small, you can walk on the fortification walls than on the cute streets, see most of it and make the required photos in a couple of hours.
Yet I advise you to visit the nice little shops and have a snack and a smoothie on one of the lovely terraces. Most of the local shops are small and the contribute to the "medieval fortification" look and feel of old Galle.

You could also visit the new town, the new part of Galle, but there you will just find another Sri Lanka town... better skip this part and visit Candy or Nuwara Eliya.

Wherever you stay on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, you will easily find a Galle tour offer. No need to take a guided tour, a car and a driver is just enough. and go and discover this nice old town by yourself. It is worth the time!

Very nice walk on the “walls of Galle”. Historical site with excellent views of ocean and inland. Plenty of refreshment sites and beautiful colonial style buildings and hotels. Take a walk through Pedlar street “shopping street”. Local art/clothing etc. at decent prices.

Fascinating fortifications with a sea side view. The galle fort stands still even after 423 years. It is best viewed during evening or early morning.
