“Padangnese Food for the Uninitiated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 week ago

There were a total of 12 of us from 3 families arrived at the restaurant on a chartered van on a Friday noon around 1230pm. A sign hung on the glass door told us that the restaurant would open again at 1pm. According to our Indonesian driver, some restaurants here in Batam close for a few hours for Friday prayers. So do take note of this if you are planning to visit this restaurant on Fridays noon time.

It was crowded when we returned half an hour later after having some coffees nearby.

Small plates of dishes occupied our long table fairly quickly with bottles of mineral water and packets of crackers already left on the table for self-service.

Many different types of chicken ranging from red-curried to green-chillied to black-sourced were dished out. Beef cooked in many different styles were available too. Other dishes included Bergedil (Indonesian fried potato patty), yellow-sourced fish, sambal and curry vegetables, light-curried hard-boiled eggs, squid, beansprouts and so on.

Free flow of white rice served in a bucket, charged by per person basis.

Are the dishes tasty? I only like the black-sourced chicken. The beef rending was too dry and tough. Yellow-curried fish was a little too sour. Almost all of the dishes were at room temperature - not warm, not cold.

Culture shock for us: Dishes were charged only for those that were consumed. For example, originally there were two pieces of Bergedil served on a plate. We ate only one. We were charged for one. What happened to the other one? We tried our very best not to think of it being put back to the pile and recycled.

How did the server know whether a plate of dish was 'touched'? He scrutinised the finished or partially-finished plate of dish carefully before putting it on the bill.

Price? Meat dishes cost around IDR15,000 per dish. Vegies around IDR8,000 per dish. Total around IDR1,100,000 (around SGD120) for total of 12 of us including fruit juices and drinks.

Try it if you have not been to one. Will I go back there again? I will think twice.

“Nice chicken rendang”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 weeks ago via mobile

Was told Sederhana is one of the most popular nasi Padang chain in Batam.
Most dishes are prepared and served at the counter with the exception of curry fish head , served warm in a stove. The only dish I liked was the chicken rendang . The rest , not fantastic .

The ‘Sederhana Restaurant’ is a restaurant situated in the heart of Tamalanrea Business Area between Sultan Hasanuddin Airport and city center, and close to Makassar Town Square. It is the favourite restaurant for people who love padangnese cuisine.

“NASI PADANG”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2017

Went there with my family; a total of 7 of us. You will probably have to get a driver to bring you there. Had a variety of dishes with some special recommendations of the squid, beef, fish roe ayam pop and ayam gulai. They will place a variety of small plates, just take what you want and leave the rest untouched. They will charge you by the plates you ate but of course, the price of the plate with vegetable will cost less than that of beef. The 7 of us paid about INR480,000 which is about SGD7 to 8/pax.
