went for the mahi mahi mousse as per 1000 places to see before you die, and it was fabulous. ordered tournedos rossini but they were out, so i ordered duck with port sauce and it was so tough it was inedible. One 5-star dish and one 1=star dish, for an average of 3 stars.

We decided to get dinner out of the hotel. The owner picked us and 6 other guests from the hotel – a common curtesy in Tahiti - and drove us over to the restaurant. He did not speak much English, but was very very gracious and friendly. The rectangular restaurant is interestingly appointed with pictures from Gaughan and Van Gogh and a fireplace at the far end. There are about 6 tables, all located on a porch overlooking Cook’s Bay. The place is manned by only the owner, his wife and their son, who worked the kitchen. No other guests were at the restaurant. Not sure if it was a slow night or if this was normal. The bay by the porch is filled with sharks (we counted 7) and rays (at least 5) all swimming together in circles. After our meals, the wife came out and fed the fish, which did provide some fascinating entertainment.

We started with a poisson cru. Lovely with just a hint of coconut taste. I had the Crab and Lobster ravioli in a cream sauce. There were about 8 ravioli, freshly home made. The meat was so thick in the thin ravioli, when you tried to cut it, the ravioli fell apart. Tasted, “melt in your mouth”, great but a bit messy. My wife had the Tuna with brandy-pepper cream sauce. She loved it. There was a little confusion when our meals arrived before the appetizer, but the owner swiftly whisked the meals away (and kept them piping hot) and brought over the starter. Also, there was a slight mixup due to language; my wife ordered just a glass of wine but he brought the whole bottle, but that was also cleared up quickly. Both meals were about $32. With the starter, drinks and ice cream dessert it came out to about $100. Because there is only one chef and all 8 of us had ordered at the same time and were all riding back together, the meals were a bit staggered, so we had to wait a bit at the end until the last couple finished eating. The only real issue, and it was not the restaurant’s fault, was that the telephone lines went down and thus we could not pay by credit card – 1st world problems. The owner and his wife apologized but it was fine. We were able to pay by cash, but the other two groups had to go back to the hotel and exchange money.
All and all a nice time and given the opportunity I would go back.

We visited most of the suggested restaurants on our visit. When we had visited them all Le Mahogany and Te Honu Iti were the top, with others good as well, but these were delightful! Both come and get you which makes the evening easy!!

Chez Roger at Te Honu Iti serves the best of foods in very pleasant surroundings. We visited him last year, and twice on our trip this year. Great food, great atmosphere with the sharks an stingrays swimming in the flooded light from the porch, and allways very pleasant staff. We will come back

They were kind enough to come pick us up at our hotel for dinner. The ambiance of the sharks and rays right near our table was great. But, unfortunately, the food was not good. The sliced Filet was not on the menu, the sirloin was tough and the ravioli tasted odd. It was extremely fishy tasting and the gravy it was in tasted like it came out of a can, the apple tart dessert was decent. It was a disappointment and very expensive.
