Location, location. Location.
Imagine this. You are the first to arrive at a gig; standing room only. You secure yourself a position with a fantasic view of the stage (2000). Then the stragglers start to arrive (2001), a coach party from Brobdingnag. One by one they position themselves in front of you until all you can see is a tiny bit of "stage left".
How do you feel? Pretty much how the One & Only chain felt when plans for The Palm were announced I guess! They do now own an hotel on the palm and manage the "eyecatching" Atlantis located at the outermost part of The Palm.
The Arabian Court might once have been THE place to be. It might once have had sea views throughout.....before The Palm.
The Norma Desmond of Dubai hotels ("it's the buildings that got bigger") still charges a premium for charms it lost some time ago.
As you gaze out upon skeletal towers like broken teeth, a freeway, monorail track and a half finished multi storey car park which looms over the whole far end of the complex and rather unassuming pool (see map below showing view from balcony), enjoy the Stockhausenesque cacophony of construction machinery, compressors and the choir of builder's shouting well into the night and early morning.
There is building NOISE from everywhere, not least a new beach facility being built by O & O themselves (beneath the aforementioned multi storey car park)!
No no no! I write this from our room dear reader and its now 02:46. I've just been on the balcony and the building noise is phenomenal! Banging, machinery and shouting workmen. The windows do shut this out but should you wish to sit outside of an evening and enjoy what is left of the view (akin to gazing across the Thames at Vauxhall) you'd require earplugs to maintain the illusion that this was your holiday of choice.
Arabian Court now comes off as the poor relation of The (more "affordable")Palace, tucked, as it is, at the fag end of the complex.
The best restaurants by a country mile are located at The Palace these being The Beach Bar and Grill and the rather gauchely monikered "Celebrities" (think Family Guy's "Les Pantalons Fancie") both serving excellent food excellently. The Palace is actually a much more impressive building with better sea views despite the first "frond" of the palm stretching across the view like a breakwater, grander architecture and more elegantly landscaped gardens and pool. The Arabian Crt was obviously, at one time, aiming for another vibe but I'm not sure what that was as it now looks third rate in comparison.
Entertainment chez Arabian Court is rather thin on the ground, well actually non-existent. There are many unused spaces and courtyards which arouse interest only to disappoint when you discover them empty and serving no obvious purpose. We did spy one game chanteuse trilling away quite nicely in the company of a disinterested couple who'd paused to catch their breath......but that was it. The Overlook hotel has nothing on this place when it comes to nightlife.
The food at EauZone @ Arabian Crt fell so far short of the mark that we shan't dwell.
We stayed half board which permitted us breakfast at The Rotisserie which was standard "eggs as you wish" with a good array of fruit and cereals, pancakes and vogueishly healthy, freshly squeezed juice mixes and smoothies. The cheeses and cold cuts such as there were were always dried up and sweaty, which was a shame.
In the evenings we could eat at almost any restaurant (The Dining Room @ The Residence and Spa still clings to it's delusions of exclusivity and barrs access to plebs from the other two hotels) and get a 180 credit (90 for kids) towards the meal or at some restaurants there is an excellent set menu which is fully covered (this is the case at the two best restaurants mentioned above). However, and this is a huge HOWEVER, no drinks at all are included in half board. Even water is charged @ 29 AUD for a large and 18 for a small bottle of local "One & Only" badged water. Given our room was awash with as many of these bottles of water as we needed.....and then some, it seems rather mean to charge (steeply) for them at mealtimes. Other drinks are madly expensive with a small bottle of beer coming in at £10 and rather ordinaire vin so eye wateringly expensive that my liver had a better holiday than me.
The rooms are ok, bed comfortable and housekeeping is excellent. The tv has no on demand video but there is ....rather quaintly, a dvd player should you find nothing on the bog standard channels available. I never made it to the local blockbuster though.
In a small room on the ground floor a very nice lady struggles gamely to entertain the children at Kids Only Club ( I think we can say without fear of gatecrashers that the "Only" is redundant) with little more than a box of crayons and some moth eaten but artfully displayed board games. Our 10 year old son spent a delightful hour with two toddlers and refuses to entertain any possibility of returning for "wreath" (!) making, Jenga challenge or even leaf hunting. There's no pleasing kids these days!
The absolute jewel in this rather tarnished crown is the staff. Professional and personable; nothing is too much trouble and a smile always greets you. They manage somehow to maintain this exemplary attitude in the face of the most appalling, high handed rudeness from some of the guests who act as though they have just ascended the throne. I hope though doubt that they are paid handsomely for shoring up this tired old gal.
There's a promotional video which, strangely, seems to be playing every time we return to our room, featuring the still gainfully employed Christy Turlington swanning fragrantly around with the Buff and the Beautiful at various One And Only resorts. It is telling that the only recognizable shot of The Arabian Court is a glimpse of the rather impressive ceiling above the "Grand Gallery". Pity, in the spirit of openness they could have shown so much more.

The Arabian Court at One & Only Royal Mirage really is a special place to stay. The grounds are beautiful including the pools and beach. The hotel itself is gorgeous as was our room. It’s really well located for walking to the marina or taking a taxi to the malls. This was our 5th trip to Dubai and by far the best. All the staff were wonderful, so kind and helpful. A special mention to Jeff, chamara and Andrew for looking after us so well and I’m sorry I can’t remember everyone’s names as they all deserve a mention really. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Dubai. They really have thought of everything so there is plenty to do, golf, water sports, pool volleyball if required, table tennis, spa, fabulous walk along the beach, curtesy boat shuttle to the palm. Or just chill out by gorgeous pools with a continual supply of drinking water and treats like fresh fruit and donuts. Truly a lovely place.

One of the best hotels of its type we have ever stayed at - a true 5 Star experience.
We could not fault the service and attention to detail. We were always greeted by staff members with a smile which is not always the case with many hotels.
What we particularly liked about this hotel it was not a high rise one and to us it was like
an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be quiet with good views of the surrounding atea

I first visited the One and Only Resort about 5 years ago for tea and drinks and knew I had to come back and stay at some point in the future with my husband.

The hotel is visually stunning. We loved the architecture in the main block and the wide open and light corridors lined with plants and Arabian patterns. You feel instantly relaxed and transported to another world.

We stayed in a standard deluxe room on the ground floor which was lovely. Really light and airy.

We had half board with our stay and tried breakfast at both the Rotisserie and Olives. Both were fantastic, with great choice and very relaxing. Bizarrely Olives has a net around it to keep the birds out but there did seem to be more birds at breakfast there than at the Rotisserie which was completely open.

We tried Nina’s, Celebrities and the Beach Bar and Grill for dinner. The food and service at Nina and Celebrities was fantastic, with a great selection on the half board menu. The service at the Beach Bar and Grill was also excellent but the food was just a bit ordinary compared to the other two restaurants, which was a shame and I felt slight disappointed we hadn’t gone somewhere else for dinner that night. The setting is lovely though. We also had lunch at Eau Zone and the Cabana pool bar at the Palace - both were excellent. We enjoyed happy hour at the Rooftop Terrace on a couple of nights which was great.

The grounds of the resort are beautiful and extensive and are clearly kept so due to the number of gardeners working hard all day to keep them looking so nice. We loved the pool at both the Arabian Court and the Palace - we loved the fact that sun loungers are spread out so you never feel like you are on top of anyone else and can properly.

We were very sad to leave the hotel and are looking forward to another trip in the future!
