There are plenty of accommodation choices in Luang Prabang, with a variety of price points. Most choices are in or near the lovely heritage listed old town, and it would suit many to be close to the action. We chose Mekong Estate because a garden setting close to the river appealed to us, especially with a seven night stay.
We couldn't have chosen better! Yes, it's a couple of km out of the centre (about A$5 on a tuk tuk) but it's not at all inconvenient. They offer a car service, but we mostly chose to take advantage of the free bikes to ride into town and around the sights. We felt quite safe, even at night. (Any problems, they provide a local phone and contact numbers).
The real winner for this place is its location. On arrival, it seems most unlikely - a rough dirt track off the main road and into a cluster of local houses and shops. But bordering the Mekong is this collection of houses in a gorgeous garden setting. We chose the Garden Loft and it was perfect. A building all to ourselves, nestled in the garden with a view of the passing traffic on the Mekong (endlessly fascinating). Plenty of room, plenty of amenities, good wifi, nice breakfast...and a really nice pool to splash into or sit beside.
And the service! Nothing is too much trouble and every assistance offered, from tour bookings to...There are plenty of accommodation choices in Luang Prabang, with a variety of price points.
