Good value for money and nice location

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 31, 2019
-Spacious triple rooms and bathroom compared to other hostels of the same price
-Easy access via Jongno-3-ga or Anguk station and Changdeokgung Airport bus stops
-Walking distance to key sites in Jongno
-Free breakfast selection of coffee, milk, juice, cereals, bread and eff
-Fast and stable wifi connection
-Well-lit and generally clean lobby, hallways and rooms
-Located beside 2 convenience stores and a number of restaurants
-The bathroom can be a lot more cleaner/better maintained
-Change of bedding/cleaning of rooms can only be requested every 3 days. Wish this was an larger bin per floor where guests can put their trash as the trash cans provided in the rooms were quite small
-Aircon and lights did not automatically turn off when key card is removed

My family stayed in this hotel for 5 days and 4 nights. We reserved the Triple Room with three single beds. The beds were comfortable and we were each given one fluffy pillow. The room was quite small for three pax but the bathroom inside the room was spacious. The free breakfast included in the rate was average. They could explore adding more variety. There were boiled eggs, bread with jam and biscuits. You can have juice or coffee.

In terms of location, it is near Anguk and other palaces. It is also walking distance to Anguk Station exit 4 and the airport bus stop for bus 6011. Overall, I would recommend this hostel to travellers who prefer to stay in quiet neighborhood. Majority of restaurants are closed by 9PM. It is not the same with Myeongdong where there are restaurants that are open past 9PM.

The staff were all accommodating. They helped us call for food delivery. They also speak good English so communication was never a problem. Triple room was big enough for our family and 3 big luggages. Property is near 2 subway stations, but Jongno-3 (sam)ga is nearer, about 5-7 mins walk and it connects to other subway lines compared to Anguk station which makes it more convenient when going around the city. The 7-11 beside the property is a big plus.

We had a few issues during our stay though. It would have been a perfect stay if not for these:

1. When we arrived at 1AM, we had to get the key card at the 7-11 beside the property, it was a smooth process. Upon reaching our assigned room, the key card does not work. Went back down to the 7-11 and I was given the master key. But that did not work either. Luckily, we were able to open a vacant room with the master key and had no choice but to stay there temporarily to sleep. Woke up early to wait for the reception to arrive, reported the incident and James tried to look for the manual key to open the room. Apparently, there was an issue with the door lock the day before and they had to "fix" it. If they are aware there was an issue, I wished they would have tried unlocking the door before they left to make sure that it works.

2. There was no hot water for 6 days. We stayed for 8 days. We constantly reported it everyday, and in fairness to them, they tried to fix it but issue persists day after day after day. They had us take a bath in 2 different rooms in 2 separate days. There were days that we did not even take a bath. It was spring time and temperature drops to 5-6 degrees in the morning, hence hot water is imperative and very much needed.

3. The TV was not turning on and Ynez had to change it to a different unit.

With all these issues that we had, we kindly asked for a partial refund at least especially for the hot water issue, but the manager did not budge. We did not insist on it since their staff were all very kind and apologetic. However, it would have been better if we were at least given at least a partial refund. They did give us late check out, but we did not do it anymore since we had limited time go around Seoul for the last time before our flight, so we just opted to check out and leave our luggages in the lobby.

Shout out to James, Ynez and Ju for being very accommodating.

Room tip: If you are booking a triple room, make sure that room 408 has the hot water fixed already.

Stayed there 2 years ago and the Family room was great. This time staying exactly the same room the condition has changed, the mattress, blanket and pillow are "old". The cloth hanger was broken, everything just seems need a refresh. In addition, they no longer provide self service breakfast with bread/toast, milk, cereal, etc. Now, only one set of sandwich and packet fruit juice per person from the reception counter. Previously it was busy at the cafe area where everyone met for breakfast and exchange info. Now everyone just collect the breakfast set and went out or went back to the room, no longer an interesting place. The only plus point is still the location, 6011 bus to/from airport, Anguk and Jongno 3-ga subway, Insadong shopping area, Changdeokgung and Gyeongbukgung palace, Bukchon village, all within walking distance.

Room tip: Every room is great

When we checked in on 6-Nov for a 4D3N stay, we noticed that the hostel was going through a floor-by-floor renovation. Manager Lee (who checked in my group of three friends) was quick to offer us a minor discount for the inconvenience and also set expectations that we may have to change rooms on our last night in the hostel since our floor was designated for start of renovation works on that day. I truly am appreciative of the transparency given upfront.

Additionally, Manager Lee and his staff were really helpful and accommodating. They made arrangements for us to pick up our key card from the 7-11 next door on one of the nights when we were unable to get back by 10pm to collect it from their temporary front desk on the 3rd floor (...and in case you’re wondering, you need to know the security passcode to enter the hostel building after 10pm). Not to forget, we also loved that our room for three had an ample number of power points to feed all our tech gadgetry. A little on the downside was that it can be a little noisy if we don’t close the windows. The late night drinkers walking along the streets can be quite a loud bunch.

There’s one thing I’d like to point out as well. This Hostel has an elevator! This is an important facility since there are many other hostels in Seoul that expect you to lug your baggage up floor-after-floor of staircases... this is something I appreciate if I have to lug 20-30Kgs of baggage around... (those who intend to shop heavily in Myeong-Dong will understand this ^_^)

Transportation-wise, the hostel is a convenient and short walking distance from the airport limousine drop-off/pick-up point in front of Changdeokgung. It’s also a major transit point to access the buses that can take you to wherever you need to be at in Seoul. In terms of trains, the hostel is close to the Anguk and Jongno-3(ga) stations.

Location-wise, we are in the heart of foodie heaven and nearby all the key palace grounds in Seoul.

Food and beverage-wise, we were spoiled for choice between the endless food and cafe options scattered all around the royal palaces and shrines around Gwanghwamun (Sejong-daero), Jongno-3(ga), Insadong...

Do go into the side streets off Insadong’s Main Street if you’re looking for authentic Korean food cooked closely to the old royal recipes; and if you’d like to go for some traditional Korean tea and snacks.

Do find your way to Gwangjang Market (광장시장) to look for mungbean pancakes (빈대떡 bindaetteok); Mini Gimbap locally nicknamed as “Drug Gimbap” because you can’t stop eating them once you pop one into your mouth (마약김밥 mayak gimbap); and more!

Just walk into any of the many cafes that can be found anywhere and everywhere you walk into. Pick one that calls out to you and head on in to sit back and relax - enjoy your coffee... the ambience... and whatever snacks that may have caught your fancy in the shop.

Stayed here twice during a recent trip and have sampled 3 different single options. Double Korean style room - mattress on floor and private Bathroom - lovely, nicely done and bedding on floor very comfortable. I had booked this in advance but first night there was a problem with the bathroom so I had to sleep in the mixed dorm - which did not go well when I had a missed a night's sleep flying. But all in all it was fine - like the dorm boxes - so much nicer than a bunk bed, but only loos and showers next to the dorm no sinks. On return I had a single room with bathroom on 3rd floor I think. This was terrible and really shouldn't be let out was a room (and clearly wasn't on the original room plan as its number - 311 or 411 -does not feature in the lift). Looks like a converted kitchen/laundry room. The shower and loo just covered by curtains from your view from the bed - and no sink. Two small high windows - but what is worse is the noise from the adjacent heating boiler which sounds like you are next door to 24hr building works and keeps you awake. Good location to stay, breakfast not great and not really great for meeting other solo travellers.
