We took a guided day trip from Paramaribo to Jodensavanne. The historic site was very interesting. It was brought to life by our guide Marina de la Costa. She provided excellent background information and really made the site come to life.

She had a neat trick in the Cemetary. The gravestones were quite difficult to read. However, after she spread a little flour over the letters, they became much clearer.

All in all it was a very worthwhile outing.

The earliest Jewish settlement in the New World was in Jodensavanne. It is a very interesting preserved-but-not-developed site. I did state in the list that there is no entry fee--however, you have to take a long boat ride on the Suriname River to get there, and that does cost. The first time, some friends and I took a smaller boat with a tour guide. The last time (earlier this year) I went with a larger group on a big boat. Thus there are options. The trip up the river is about 4 hours up and also back, thus you will need to be prepared with sunblock, snacks, and water. It is a beautiful trip and if you have a guide, he can explain the things you will see on the way. Jodensavanne itself is a charming place, despite the history of it being a plantation with slaves. With the smaller boat, we were able to spend time there and see everything. With the large boat, we only had an hour, so check out ahead of time how long you can explore, or you might be disappointed. Local Indians take care of the place, and also have some stands where you can buy souvenirs. One warning: there is a "health spring" there that some people believe will cure whatever ails you. However, don't drink from it, as it is muddied by many visitors. The only person I personally know that drank there got sick! Another note: this isn't Disneyland. Don't expect a lot of services or royal treatment. It is what it is! and well worth the trip for those who want a "real" place not created or altered to attract tourists.

Quite a journey to get there with the bridge out and the dirt road, but very interesting to see the remains of the oldest Jewish synagogue in the new world. Once you get there, you need to walk a short path through the jungle to see the cemetery and synagogue. There are good signs which explain everything, but the area could use a little maintenance.

Because I had read some novels of the Surinamese writer Cynthia McLeod I had to visit Jodensavanne. As there were no organized daytrips during the week I stayed in Paramaribo I chartered a taxi. With a taxi you are free and make a stop whenever you want, but on the other hand you have no guide for explanation (the taxi driver had never been there). There are however signs with explanation. The distance from Paramaribo is about 50 km. Jodensavanne is situated on the other side of the Surinam River. This means that you have to use the ferry to cross the river. Sometimes you have to wait some time but I was lucky.

In this region Jewish refugees from mainly Portugal/Brazil settled along the river in the17th century. They lived on sugar-cane plantations. Jodensavanne is built in the jungle on a hill overlooking the river. There is a creole cemetery where free people of African and mixed descent are buried. On the numerous tombstones of the Jewish cemetery you can see Portuguese family names, many of which many still exist in Surinam. Of the stone synagogue from 1685 only the remains are left. For me, it was more than worth the long trip.

Highly recommended is a stop at the Overbridge resort, where I had an excellent, cheap Surinamese lunch and time to relax along the Surinam River.
