The earliest Jewish settlement in the New World was in Jodensavanne. It is a very interesting preserved-but-not-developed site. I did state in the list that there is no entry fee--however, you have to take a long boat ride on the Suriname River to get there, and that does cost. The first time, some friends and I took a smaller boat with a tour guide. The last time (earlier this year) I went with a larger group on a big boat. Thus there are options. The trip up the river is about 4 hours up and also back, thus you will need to be prepared with sunblock, snacks, and water. It is a beautiful trip and if you have a guide, he can explain the things you will see on the way. Jodensavanne itself is a charming place, despite the history of it being a plantation with slaves. With the smaller boat, we were able to spend time there and see everything. With the large boat, we only had an hour, so check out ahead of time how long you can explore, or you might be disappointed. Local Indians take care of the place, and also have some stands where you can buy souvenirs. One warning: there is a "health spring" there that some people believe will cure whatever ails you. However, don't drink from it, as it is muddied by many visitors. The only person I personally know that drank there got sick! Another note: this isn't Disneyland. Don't expect a lot of services or royal treatment. It is what it is! and well worth the trip for those who want a "real" place not created or altered to attract tourists.
