It was important for me to walk the ground where some of the first settlers in Suriname lived. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful. I appreciated the informative panels on the site. The area would benefit from environmentally friendly rest room and recreational space.
Marina Da Costa offers a great day trip to Joden Savannah. Her family is steeped in Jewish Surinamese history so she is the ideal person to have you show around. First, by car to Overbridge, then a lovely trip on the river, a visit to her family plantation and then a walk around Joden Savannah. She is enthusiastic, interesting and entertaining- definitely worth your while!
If you do this, definitely go with Marina de la Costa, whose family has been in Suriname since some of the first Jews were invited. Suriname has a very interesting Jewish history, and Marina's family has been part of it the entire time. Her tour takes you to her family's plantation as well as to Jodensavanne and Overbridge.
To really understand Jodensavanne's significance, you have to understand and appreciate the history behind it, and the history of Jews in Suriname. It is well worth the time to learn and to see a historically significant part of the history here.
We went over the road and crossed the river by ferry. In Jodensavanna, you see what is left of a synagogue as well as numerous tombs, one area with slave tombs. It is well kept, clean but very hot.
