For once a hotel that truly lives up to its 5* rating… Shangri-La offers the intrepid traveller everything they want on a luxury holiday…
Rooms
The rooms are spacious, and our balcony had an amazing view of the Grand Mosque and the waterfront. The bed was very comfortable, and we had a sizeable bath and shower.
For those who like to squeeze in some work a office desk sits nicely next to the balcony. There was ample storage and conveniently, an iron / ironing board. The cleaning staff are incredible – the rooms look brand new everyday!
Facilities
For relaxation, you have an infinity pool with bar – with two beaches either side of it. Staff are very attentive and are on hand to provide beverages, food or umbrellas. In regards to dining, there is large buffet hall supported by a Chinese, Vietnamese and French [menu-based] restaurants.
The lobby also boasts a cocktail bar with a view of the bay. The hotel has a canal running through it – with a ferry service taking you to the local market (the Souk) or the sister hotel – Traders.
Location
Shang is roughly 20 – 25 minutes from the airport. There are ample taxis or ubers to get you there / back.
There is a market (Souk) next to the hotel however its become a tad empty since our visit to Traders 4years ago. This is no doubt thanks to the new mega complex 10minute walk from the hotel – Al Qana. Possibly one of the most visually impressive arcades you will come across – it boasts numerous restaurants, coffee shops and cinemas. The food is phenomenal – but can be expensive. Its mostly locals here – which creates a nice vibe.
If you want something more western – head over to another new complex – Soul Beach… c. 25min by car. In the new cultural quarter by the Louvre and the future Guggenheim – it offers alcoholic bars, clubs and restaurants across an expansive beach.
