Imam Khomeini was central to Iran's Islamic Revolution and he remained the country's leader for another decade afterwards. This shrine was built in his honor though it also contains the graves of a number of other important people among which family members. Whatever you may think of Khomeini and his principles, this shrine is crucial piece in understanding the Iranian puzzle. It's an easy ride by metro though it will take you far out of the city. If you are thinking of renting a car and driver to take you to Qom and/or Kashan from Tehran it can easily be combined as you pass by the shrine on the way. An hour should be enough to experience it all.

This is a holy place near the Imam Khomeini International Airport and has hundreds of visitors at all times; please make sure that you do not carry any eatables / cigarettes etc since these are not allowed inside the Shrine

Imam Chomeini's Holy Shrine was on my must visit place in Iran list. I wasn't disappointed at all when I reached the burial place of the iconic man in the history. It's easily accessible place by metro (like 5-10 minutes walk from the station). This whole complex is widely open for everyone (no addmission fee). It's totally worth going inside the building. There is separate entrance for women and men who can meet up inside. Ladies should wear a chador which they can easily borrow at the entrance to the shrine itself from friendly people who work there.

Huge complex completely covered with beautiful Persian carpets; not to be missed the humongous blue carpet.
The volume of the structure is breathtaking.
