Imam Khomeini was central to Iran's Islamic Revolution and he remained the country's leader for another decade afterwards. This shrine was built in his honor though it also contains the graves of a number of other important people among which family members. Whatever you may think of Khomeini and his principles, this shrine is crucial piece in understanding the Iranian puzzle. It's an easy ride by metro though it will take you far out of the city. If you are thinking of renting a car and driver to take you to Qom and/or Kashan from Tehran it can easily be combined as you pass by the shrine on the way. An hour should be enough to experience it all.
