Church is very impressive and beautiful on the inside and out. Very old church and the detail really shows. Madaba is know for its mosaics and the artwork there has great attention to detail. It has a crows nest which gives you an amazing view of the the whole city and there is museum in the bottom of the church. This site is very popular with tourists as well. My wife and I were married here this past September. Unforgettable and I would recommend if you are visiting or stopping by Madaba, Jordan this is a must see.

We almost never visited this church as it does not get the recognition to match the nearby St Gregory's, with its famous and rightly so mosaic Madaba Map. However in my opinion the Church of St John has so much more to offer.
The gentleman who greets you and collects your 1 JOD was so charming and gave us an excellent overview of the historical interests.
There is a very good selection of old photos of Madaba.
The highlight however has to be in the cellars beneath the church. It's a warren of chambers, incredibly restored and presented with descriptions, it was captivating down here and there is a "secret" passage that leads you back up not the church.
The church which has been rebuilt is nice without any redeeming features.

The next reason to visit this church is the view from the top of the tower to look over all of Madaba in its glory. (Health and safety aficionados, would be horrified on the route up the tower)....

In summary a truly wonderful place to visit, I would recommend allowing more time to visit this church than St Gregory's...... make the effort to seek it out.

A very old Church with incredibly warm welxome from the staff.
Various things to do / see including the Church itself, belfroy and its view, byzantine ruins and a nice photo exposition.

Went on a friday around 5 PM, when local Christian community gather to pray. This place is Alive ans social, and that's what makes it special!

Visit on top. You can visit the foundation with all the mosaics and also climb to the top of the church by the stairs.
