Groups of aggressive and threatening men/pick-pockets linger outside waiting to target tourists and passers-by for money. My family and I were repeatedly threatened and approached both outside of the hotel and in the reception – the doorstaff did nothing to help. We saw a number of other incidents around the hotel. This is a dangerous area to stay as a foreigner.

Our "standard double" room was huge, with a giant bathroom (complete with tub and separate shower) and beautiful carpets and beds and wallpaper. One night at three in the morning a band started practicing (seriously: electric guitar, drums, vocals) two floors below us, but after I complained at the desk they immediately quit. They also provide you with multiple water bottles each day. As an American, beware that there is no AC here, though. (This is entirely typical for the region.)

Probably not up to the standards of the Whitehouse of the Clintons, Bushes, or Obamas, but still a decent hotel. When it first opened 15 years ago or so, this hotel was a fabulous break from the big, cold places like Chinggis Khaan and UB Hotel, and a great value. Since then, lots of new places have popped up, offering similar good value. Whitehouse Hotel is still a good hotel though, if you're not too demanding of luxury. Fairly reliable room and cleanliness. Quite OK, especially if on a limited budget.

If you judge the hotel based on the outside appearance you are going to be disappointed. Upon entering you will find a much warmer environment with staff willing to help in any capacity they can. Though the furnishings are a bit outdated and have seen better days, our room was clean and spacious. The staffs English is not the best, but patience and charades will help you get what you need. We checked out of our room to head to the National Parks and were aloud to keep our bags at the hotel overnight, a convenience many hotels may not offer. There were two choices for breakfast a Korean option and Western/European option. We chose the European and was not disappointed.

We arrived and found astaff that was not too friendly or helpful. When we got into our room we were greeted by a very strong food smell. It seems that we were getting the smells from the Korean restaurant down below, and the smells where permanent, even though we opened the windows for a couple of hours. (Rm 204) The bed covers seems like they were not washed for years. On our first night we asked if we could exchange money, and the girl said yes, but at an unfavourable rate. When we ask the receptionist in the morning if we could exchange money she said no, that they don't do that. Of course she couldn't be bothered. On a positive note, the Japanese restaurant serves good food, but when we arrived at 9:20 p.m. and asked for a table, she kept telling us that they close at 10, so we did not feel very welcome. The western style breakfast was fine, and the service was very friendly. The location is not ideal. It is a bit far from the center. In all the price was definitely not worth it. There are better hotels in the center for only a little more money.
