The National Museum of Art is the main Mozambican reference on the development of national arts. This Museum was created in 1989 in order to respond to the need for preservation, education and appreciation of the artistic wealth of Mozambique. The National Art Museum has two permanent exhibitions that, through the canvas, ceramic sculpture, tell the main moments of the history of Mozambique, highlighting the period of national independence in the 1960s, through the reach of independence, struggle for the construction of An independent country, for the account of the art of civil war and the cry for peace. The National Museum of Art brings the main artists from Mozambique, especially the Masters Rafael Shikani, Malangatana Nguenya, Samate Mulungo, Alberto Chissano, Reinata, Chichorro, Bertina Lopes.

I am not really into arts, but I must say that I really did enjoy myself at this museum. Had me wondering what was going on in the minds of the artists who created these arts. Great for the family, friends, etc... Pets are not allowed.

I like to go her once in a while to just wander about in solitude and take in the artistic interpretations of the war-torn years. For this is mainly a collection of works by an older generation of artists, many not with us anymore, that were active in the seventies and eighties. Most notably the godfather of Moz art, Malangatana, who is represented by a handful of paintings depicting the horrors and suffering of war.

The museum charges a nominal entrance fee that shouldn't scare away anyone. The upper floor shows the permanent collection, while the exhibit in the main hall on the ground floor is changing once in a while (so it's worthwhile to return).

For more contemporary works of art you need to seek out galleries such as Kulungwana or Nucleo de Arte.

Small museum in the centre of Maputo which gives a good impression of Mozambican modern art. Paintings and sculptures show a great talent for the bizarre and fantastical.
