Beautiful Resort

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 17, 2015
We went to Belize for a friends' wedding and stayed here with another couple. We stayed in the upstairs 2 bedroom in the main house and it was perfect! It was so roomy and had a great layout! It overlooked the pool and had chairs and tables out in the front. My favorite was the back porch. It was screened in and had a little couch and chairs - perfect spot for us all to hang out! The staff was super friendly! Ernesto was the best and helped us with everything we needed and so was Sam. They were all really great and made our trip even better. We definitely want to go back one day. It was nice that they had the free kayaks and bikes as well.

We also ate at Capricorn, which was a beachfront restaurant a little ways down that was delicious!

It was a great trip. I would recommend this place to anyone going to San Pedro.

Cocotal has all that people who want to relax are looking for. Great accomodations, terrific staff and a well maintained property and pool. It's walking distance to several restaurants as well. It's easy to get to San Pedro or ponts north by water ferry or golf cart rental. We just concluded our 4th time at Cocotal with a 2 week stay in the fromt cabana. We will return as it's our favorite place to relax.

We spent four nights at Cocotal and, like the other reviewers, were impressed with accommodations and staff. We had the ground floor suite in the main building which provides a full kitchen, large living/dining area, spacious bedroom and view of the pool area through to the beach. Both the living area and the bedroom have air conditioning. The fact that they arrange pick up and return to the airport and a stop for provisions on the way in makes for an easy stay. There are also restaurants nearby (Capricorn is particularly good - don't miss the grouper cakes!) and there is a barbecue available for guest use. We were lucky to be there when Tanya (the owner) was on site and heard about plans for a one-bedroom stand-alone house which will overlook the beach. Her enthusiasm for maintaining the quiet welcoming atmosphere of Cocotal was delightful. The only drawback, and it applies to that entire area, is the sea grass that clogs the shore.

First, Cocotal arranged our pickup (we stayed days), which included a stop at a local tienda to buy provisions (eggs, beer, bagels, butter, ham, juice, assorted snacks, etc.) as we wanted to make our own breakfast every day (cheaper than eating out, and we got exactly what we wanted) .

Our cabana was extremely clean, tastefully decorated and very nicely furnished. The pictures online do not do it justice in any way and I was pleasantly surprised to see gorgeous Belizean wood, no sign of nasty particle-board furniture or over-the-top kitschy decorations. The cabanas are not closely spaced, so we never heard other guests. We were thrilled with how well-stocked it was (big water dispenser, coffee maker, toaster - essentially a full kitchen with everything you need). The A/C worked great, and there was an option for just fans if that's more your thing. No musty/moldy smells (very hard to avoid in tropical climates). They shower (no tub) had great water pressure and was immaculate. They had a nice selection of games (we played "naughty" scrabble) for the day it rained.

The staff went out of their way to welcome and assist us. Being "type A" Bostonians, we had LOTS of questions and Ernesto was patient, helpful and personable. They arranged private snorkeling tours (we didn't want to go with a big group) for just me and my fiance, and they were very reasonably priced tours (no gouging us for serving as the intermediary, which we've encountered elsewhere). Samuel even met us in town one night to show us the Chicken Drop and take us to a couple of bars - great guy! They paid attention to the little things - extras - that made our stay perfect - for example, I had found several shells that I wanted to take home and they offered to fill a bucket with bleach and water so I could soak it and get rid of the fishy smell. Mara quickly became our buddy, and hung out at times in our room while we got ready to go out. She was the perfect watchdog/playmate/companion.

Any downsides? Two things to note:

1. There are lots of vicious bugs (or nasty little flys/crustacean things - some call them botless flys) that basically devoured me (but not my fiance - evidently they like very pale, non-hairy skin best!). Normally the Cocotal staff has some sort of oil that helps with this, but they were out. I got eaten alive by both these critters and the mosquitoes (no joke here - 148 bites by the end of the trip). DEET 25% was not sufficient for the mosquitoes - plan to bring 40-50% and understand that this doesn't work with the other bugs at all. So come prepared with the right stuff (bring Benedryl pills, cream, etc.). But that's not only on Cocotal - all over Ambergris Caye has this. And some people don't get bitten at all, I guess...but lots do.

#2 - At first, it seems a bit far away from the downtown area - especially on that first cab ride from the airport where you have no clue about where you are, or where you are going But we quickly realized that this was a very, very good thing as we wanted to chill out, and Cocotal was a private paradise. Downtown was fun and lively, but crowded and noisy. Given I have a fused ankle, we opted to forgo the use of the free bikes and rented a golf cart for the week (it was even there, waiting for us, when we arrived!). You don't need it, but for us it was invaluable as we liked to go into the main downtown area each night for dinner and drinks and the golf cart was a fun (bumpy!), safe and relaxing way to do this. Cocotal is located north of "the bridge" (there's only one - hence the name) and you have to pay a small fee ($1 USD?) to pass over it each time (newly built- fee is to pay for it). They are making major improvements on the road that goes from the bridge to the Cocotal (and beyond) and even during the short time we were there, new sections of the road were repaved. My guess, is that as I write this now (3 months later) that it's fully complete. Even if it isn't, the ride was enjoyable, and fairly quick (15 minutes). So this shouldn't be a deterrent.

Go to Cocotal...you will be well-cared for!

Room tip: No need for Beach Casita unless more than 2 ppl. Yellow cabana was perfect.

My husband and I have stayed in various spots in Belize over the years but always on the mainland. This was our first trip to Ambergris Caye. We are always looking for places to stay that are small but have quality amenities, facilities and service. We found that with Cocotal. We stayed for one week in the beachfront cabana. It was an excellent choice. It was directly on the beach - the views from the front porch were terrific. Especially in the morning - the sun rising over the sea was spectacular. There was a constant breeze so we didn't have to use the air conditioning at all. We just opened all of the doors and windows and the wonderful breeze kept us cool day and night.

The cabana has a kitchenette which was so great for us. We went shopping in the local stores and bought fruit, vegetables and groceries and had breakfasts and dinners in our cabana. We had great lunches out at the various spots locally - some within walking distance of Cocotal and others in San Pedro. We'd take the bikes or golf cart into San Pedro for shopping, exploring and dining out.

We are not demanding travellers. But the few requests that we had of Ernesto and the staff at Cocotal were responded to so quickly and efficiently - and always with a smile.

The way that Cocotal is run creates an 'at home' type of atmosphere - the honour bar, the barbecue area, the kayaks and bikes - all contribute to that. You don't feel like you're a guest visiting a resort - you actually feel like you are somewhere that is your home - even if it is just for a week or two.

We loved it so much that we have already booked our two weeks at Cocotal for next year. And, I expect that there will be many more visits to come after that as well!

Only 5 cabanas on the premises with beautifully kept grounds. There are kayaks to take out and a buoy to tie up to about a mile off. Great snorkeling! No restaurant on premises, but an easy walk to several including Akbol for breakfast and White Sands next door. Ernesto, the concierge, was so nice and accommodating. He booked all of our excursions and our puddle-jumper flights. We didn't have a care, really. Samuel and his team were always super-friendly and quick to help if we needed anything. Best trip we have taken in a while!

Room tip: All of the cabanas are beautifully trimmed in mahogany with kitchen and bath. Can't really make a bad choice.
