Alviso Marina County Park

It is a lovely place to visit especially in the evenings when the sun is on the corner almost about to set. Overlooking the bay area mountains is this park which stays open till dusk. Many people come here for walking, jogging and biking. If you are lucky like we were...you can see the train which passes by you. Don't forget to bring your camera as you will see splendid colours in sky and landscape too.

This park is at the very southern end of San Francisco Bay and allows bicycles and dogs on a short (6') leash. There are various type of birds and animals to be seen in the park. The day that I was there I saw ground squirrels, water pipits, coots, ducks and various little song birds. They also have a picnic area and various boardwalks and observation decks. There is an old cannery across the street from the main entrance.

Visited three times over a ten day period. I arrived at dawn and parked on street out side the parking lot. Lots do not open until 8 A.M. You can walk through the little gate on the right, and spend dawn with the rails calling. Check on the tide chart...if you go at high tide or as tide is receding you can get better photos of the birds feeding. I am from the midwest so these ocean birds are fun for me to see.

Suitable for a leisure walk. You could feel the light breeze along with a marina scenery. Quiet and relaxing.

The Alviso Marina County Park provides plenty of free parking, clean bathroom facilities, and a few picnic tables and benches. The park is a gateway to trails within the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. We started our nine mile walk/hike around the salt flats early in the cool morning while the sulfur/salt water smell was still mild. As the morning sun came out the smell became a bit strong, though the smell seems to depend on which of the salt ponds you are near. Along the walk, we saw bits of decaying history, old abandoned telephone poles, a derelict boat half sunken in the marsh, and broken docks. At the same time we also walked along the railroad where two Altamont Express trains had passed by earlier in the morning. Some of the wildlife we saw included herons, cormorants, seagulls, jellyfish in the salt ponds, and rabbits. A bit sad to see was a trail of animal remains--mostly seagulls--that littered the trail. During this weekday hike we came across only one jogger having her morning run. There is no shade whatsoever, so make sure you have a hat and plenty of sunscreen. The levee trail was a bit muddy as it had rained the day before, however we cleaned our shoes with the wire-brush stations just outside the bathroom facility. Also, dogs are not allowed on the trails. By the end of our walk there were people lunching at the picnic tables. Overall, we had an enjoyable time.
