Description: It was here in Chinatown that the Matchbox story began. This narrow, rectangular building was three stories tall, fifteen feet wide, and looked like a matchbox. It stood vacant for so long, a tree grew inside of it, like kindling waiting to start a new fire. Walk past the torch that lights our front door, come in and smell the hot, crackling fire from two brick ovens. Have a seat inside, where we built the reclaimed timber and steel finishes with our own hands, or relax in the sunny atrium that was once an alleyway. Wherever you choose, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Touch vintage matchboxes from our personal collections, inset on every table, or ask for a bottle of our Matchbox Blend, made with love and featuring that spunky tree that started it all. We’re Chinatown neighborhood gathering place for fun, upscale casual dining, with local, award-winning beers, broad spectrum wines, and signature cocktails you won’t find anywhere else.

Arrived with 9 friends having Saturday evening reservations. We were seated quickly and served great crusty thin crust pizza and local beer. The gracious staff accommodated additional friends with grace and good humor. Cheers arose from those at the bar and spread throughout the dining room while watching news coverage of the Women's March. Would go back in a minute!

Having braved the elements, hiked the distances and then survived the subway, we were exhausted and anxious to find a great, yet easy dinner option that was not fast food. As we exited the Metro, a guy took the time to stop and explain why he thought Matchbox would be idea for us. Excellent food, not too noisy but with more than sufficient atmosphere at a reasonable price and near our hotel in Crystal City. Matchbox hit all the boxes and the some! My salad with grilled tuna was Excellent. The ribs earned high marks as did the crab sandwhich. One of our party tried the chicken sandwhich with a deviled egg spread was great - he didn't share so I can't comment first hand. The staff was very attentive. A great recommendation.

We were able to book a table for 10 for dinner on New Year's Day, before heading to the Verizon Center for the Caps game. The restaurant was very full, very busy, and it was fun to be surrounded by fellow Caps fans. Staff were friendly and efficient. Beer, sodas, pizzas and burgers were good. Meals arrived as expected and in good time.

Pizza is hard to hate but there are so many levels of ranking pizza. Let's face it, bad pizza is still pretty good. Matchbox pizza is a solid 7.7 out of 10. The pizza I had in Naples.... was a 9.5.
With that said, the pizza was fresh and tasty and cooked very well. I would definitely go back!

Stopped in for lunch with some friends and we each ordered a personal pizza. I got the fire and smoke I think, the only one with "very spicy" on the menu. It was great! Not that spicy, but the smoky cheese was nice. Service was prompt and polite in a packed lunch service on a weekday. I think this will be an annual stop for my conference.
