To be honest, I was disappointed with this hotel. That’s totally down to me not doing enough research, accepting its Top 5 placing on TripAdvisor without question, and assuming that all Kimptons are the same.
Firstly, I was surprised that this Kimpton does not offer full service dining options. It’s affiliate restaurant off the lobby only offers breakfast from Monday to Friday - and then only from 8am to 10am (rather late if you wanted an early start) - and no lunch and dinner service on a Sunday. Now I know that D.C. is dead quiet on a weekend, but other hotels in the area offer their guests a full restaurant service seven days a week. The free continental breakfast that they put out on the Sunday morning was fine, but not the hearty American breakfast I was hoping for. For dinner on the Sunday night, I enjoyed the short walk to the Phoenix Park Hotel’s Irish bar/restaurant. That said, the breakfast on the Monday morning was very extensive and tasted very good.
My late evening check-in was quick and personable, but the receptionist made no reference to my Diamond Elite status at all, even though I could see from the IHG app that my room had been upgraded 24 hours earlier. That meant I was also not offered a voucher for a free breakfast on the Monday morning. Fortunately, another colleague of his rectified that the next morning.
The room and bathroom were nicely appointed, with a comfortable bed and bedding. My main criticism was the noise, not from the street, but from the fridge that rattled all night, the extractor fan in the bathroom that operated 24/7, and the air conditioning system that seemingly continues to hum even after you’ve turned it off. As I was only there two nights and it was a rewards night stay, I lived with. Fortunately on my second night, this trio of sounds did morph a little into background white noise.
If work or pleasure does bring me back to the city, I will check out some of the other IHG hotels here.
