We stayed 7 nights for our anniversary in a Hillside suite (621). Cons: the taxis, some of the resort employees and the housekeeping. While taxis were readily available at the resort, they are shared so you may have multiple stops. The prices are per person and were generally $5 each to red hook (5 minute drive), $20 each to/from airport (25 minute drive) and $20 each to Magens Bay Area (20 minute drive) . We also went to the movies (15 minute drive) and that was $10 each there, but a different driver charged us more for the return. Would recommend staying on the resort as much as possible. We were also turned off by the bad attitude and lack of warmth from some of the resort employees and drivers. Nothing that ruined the trip, and there were plenty of friendly staff too (the luggage guy, all the bartenders, one towel guy, a couple waitresses were great), but most of the front desk ladies, one towel guy and a couple ladies at the restaurant seemed like they were grumpy and bothered by us. No greetings back to us when we greeted them, almost mad, not what you would expect from anyone working in hospitality who is having a standard interaction with a guest. Was noteworthy because it happened with more than a handful of people. The ladies who helped me book the reservation were nice and helpful. Housekeeping came 3 times during our week stay and I had to call for it one time. When they did come, they didn’t do the dishes or leave more coffee or creamer without me having to bug them each time about needing coffee for each day. But when I asked they would accommodate. We had a do not disturb sign out for an hour in the mornings from 8-9 while we had coffee and got ready. They seemed to use that as an excuse to not come clean the room at all (front desk told me that’s why housekeeping didn’t come). One day the maid came as we were leaving and when we returned, she didn’t even clean the room, she just left a bag of towels and toilet paper at the door, which was strange because she saw us leaving. One day I intentionally didn’t leave a do not disturb sign to make sure it got cleaned and they didn’t clean it until super late in the day, and of course didn’t do any of the dishes (maybe they just don’t do dishes as part of housekeeping?)
PROS: Beautiful, clean beach, awesome snorkeling/marine life (turtles, sting rays, barracuda, tons of beautiful fish, cool reefs) all right there. Was great having chairs and umbrellas set up for guests to use at no charge (people not staying at the resort couldn’t use them), the bar and sunset grille restaurants were great. Selection of food and drinks good, and although sunset grille was pricier, we thought it was worth it to splurge a few nights. Sea Bass and Filet steak were amazing. The bar’s Tuna nachos were delicious. They even had happy hour. We had some groceries delivered at check in, which we recommend to supplement the restaurants. The dive shop on site was also great. We had a wonderful 2 tank dive. We liked the leisurely walk back to our room up the stairs, as the view from the 2nd floor hillside balcony was worth it. Glad we didn’t get a beach front room right next to all the people. The room was nice and spacious. Not like a hotel room, it’s more like an Airbnb condo, but it was clean and we liked the room a lot despite some normal wear and tear. The pool and hot tub was also clean and spacious. We enjoyed that a few times too.
We got our fill of St. Thomas and had a great trip. Probably won’t return, but we would definitely recommend this place to stay to others who are visiting. My mom and sister visited a month before we did and they stayed at Margaritaville and did not seem to have enjoyed their stay as much as we did at Secret Harbor.
