I cannot believe how good this place is, how affordable it is, and that it's near me in Rincon, Puerto Rico.
This is an outdoor restaurant that serves only organic, fresh, local produce with fresh-caught local fish. They even make their own sauces. I wish they'd bottle the creamy cilantro sauce so I can put it on everything I make at home.
The garden is right on site, so you can walk around it while you wait for your food.
The chef/owner drives around every week to three different places to make sure he's getting the best possible fish in the area. He's always back there in the food truck, pushing out your dinner.
His wife is the lovely one who's taking your order while holding a baby.
The Mahi burger has this amazing coating - but it's not just breading. I asked the chef to write me how he makes the Mahi burger coating and the Caribbean Fritters, and this is what he said:
The Mahi burger is coated with shredded coconut (which is chopped very finely). Then I mix it with Indian style yellow curry and other spices. I serve it with pico de gallo and our house spicy mango sauce.
For the Alcapurria cups (Caribbean fritters), I grate green (unripe) banana, green plantain and a root plant call "yautía" that is similar to the yuca. I mix a spice called achiote (or annatto in English). I bread it and make it into a cup and serve it with Colombian Style shrimp ceviche.
Wow, isn't that awesome!
I'm always torn between whether to get the Mahi burger, grouper tacos or Maui tacos, I love them all equally.
I like to take groups here because it's so affordable, we can re-arrange the tables to get perfect seating, and it's not too loud to talk.
In many ways, this isn't just a normal restaurant. Chef's Garden is the 'entrepreneur branch' of a non-profit whose mission it is to "lift communities through organica agriculture and culinary projects." They teach organic agriculture and cooking to children, at-risk youth, mentally handicap groups, the elderly, church groups, and adults with addiction issues.
Some of the vegetables they raise are purchased by Tamboo and Mangia Mi.
So, I just feel really really good about this place from many angles. They've just begun and I think they're going to get better and better.
This place is special.
