Thanks Toni for your feedback.
On the booking process we are very sorry that this occurred and a real shame we missed it for you and dropped the ball. The last thing we would of wanted is to ruin your special occasion. I apologise for that!
As a local it is disappointing you would turn to an online public forum for an explanation of cellar door vs onsite prices and didn’t ask in person. But because you have suggested you would love some clarification here is some information below that we hope helps answer your question. This pricing system we have run for 3 years now - its not new. When you purchase a bottle of pinot gris for $26 to take home (which we believe is a very reasonable price and comparable to other quality boutique vineyards) you enjoy it offsite, chill it yourself, use your own glassware etc. When guests come and dine in at omata estate there are significant additional costs to our business.
Your bottle of wine is served to you by a staff member (wage costs constantly increase and we strive to pay our staff a fair and reasonable wage because they work hard to look after guests like yourself).
To serve you that bottle of pinot gris for $44 we have council and compliance costs (an on liquor license is required, we require a manager on duty to serve - both yearly ongoing expenses and also outright costs to obtain). We have costs associated with strict resource consent requirements and food safety requirements to have patrons on site - and we have to have food to be able to supply alcohol on site.
The wine is chilled in our fridges (which we had to purchase, ongoing costs to maintain and run), we have restaurant fit out expenses (e.g. we serve it on tables and chairs which we had to purchase, gardens to maintain, paintwork, stereo systems etc), we serve it in glassware (which we have paid for and also after you have drunk your wine we have to clean it through a dish washer machine which we had to purchase, and it has ongoing expenses to operate, cleaning products to operate and also requires a staff member to polish it after cleaned).
I could continue listing further costs but if you wanted to discuss in person id be more than happy to call you to chat further.
We believe $44 is a reasonable cost to have a world class bottle of pinot gris in what we believe is an outstanding location but we are sorry you feel that way.
All the best for the future and we hope to accomodate you again one day. Thanks, Sarah
