Great place for lunch. Wine Tasting was great and wood fire pizzas were on point. Highly recommend the Rose wine.

Fantastic Lunch, shout out to Luke, you were tops! Handled our table with great wisdom, and tenacity
Stunning pizza! Stunning wine!! Stunning atmosphere!! Vegan and gluten free friendly and delicious! Will be revisiting ASAP!
As a local, I have enjoyed regular outings to Omata estate winery during their summer months. It has always been on my list of places to go when showing visitors around northland. Their platters are amazing! Unfortunately this year, it appears they have implemented a new pricing strategy on their bottles of wine....A dine in price of $44 (for their Pinot Gris) or takeaway price of $26....?! I’m not sure they can justify the huge margin they are making on the dine in bottle? Would love an explanation from the winery? I was also extremely disappointed that I had emailed a booking a few day before, having not heard back, I phoned and left a voicemail the day before re-confirming as it was my mother’s birthday and I knew they would be busy. I still had not heard back on the morning of the booking and rang a couple more times and only got their answer phone which was an old message about Being closed Xmas day. When we arrived, they were fully booked of course. The only redeeming outcome was that the staff member managed to find a table for us but we were only able to stay for an hour. I would suggest that Omata Estate seriously review the pricing on their ‘dine in’ bottles and their booking system. There are many great wineries to visit in Northland that offer a more respectable price for a bottle of wine.
Thanks Toni for your feedback.
On the booking process we are very sorry that this occurred and a real shame we missed it for you and dropped the ball. The last thing we would of wanted is to ruin your special occasion. I apologise for that!
As a local it is disappointing you would turn to an online public forum for an explanation of cellar door vs onsite prices and didn’t ask in person. But because you have suggested you would love some clarification here is some information below that we hope helps answer your question. This pricing system we have run for 3 years now - its not new. When you purchase a bottle of pinot gris for $26 to take home (which we believe is a very reasonable price and comparable to other quality boutique vineyards) you enjoy it offsite, chill it yourself, use your own glassware etc. When guests come and dine in at omata estate there are significant additional costs to our business.
Your bottle of wine is served to you by a staff member (wage costs constantly increase and we strive to pay our staff a fair and reasonable wage because they work hard to look after guests like yourself).
To serve you that bottle of pinot gris for $44 we have council and compliance costs (an on liquor license is required, we require a manager on duty to serve - both yearly ongoing expenses and also outright costs to obtain). We have costs associated with strict resource consent requirements and food safety requirements to have patrons on site - and we have to have food to be able to supply alcohol on site.
The wine is chilled in our fridges (which we had to purchase, ongoing costs to maintain and run), we have restaurant fit out expenses (e.g. we serve it on tables and chairs which we had to purchase, gardens to maintain, paintwork, stereo systems etc), we serve it in glassware (which we have paid for and also after you have drunk your wine we have to clean it through a dish washer machine which we had to purchase, and it has ongoing expenses to operate, cleaning products to operate and also requires a staff member to polish it after cleaned).
I could continue listing further costs but if you wanted to discuss in person id be more than happy to call you to chat further.
We believe $44 is a reasonable cost to have a world class bottle of pinot gris in what we believe is an outstanding location but we are sorry you feel that way.
All the best for the future and we hope to accomodate you again one day. Thanks, Sarah
Super spot offering mainly wood fired pizza in a casual setting overlooking the vineyard. The cellar door is an excellent experience with an introduction to their small yet quality selection of wines.
