This gorge is spectacular. The colour of the water is the clearest aqua blue/green I’ve ever seen. Lots of photo opportunities and a very easy walk to the bridge.

Very overcrowded with people and sandflies. Quite the detour from hokitika for a underwhelming short walk. If you are traveling the west coast and want a similar photo opportunity then the blue pools near wanaka are much better.

First thing - there is no doubt that when the water is blue/green this place is probably amazing. The other reviews confirm that. However, I happened to go the day after *a lot* of rain. Unbeknown to me this has the affect of turning the water a dull grey colour (somehow). Everyone there was quite disappointed and underwhelmed. I was also attacked by sand flies. Attacked. Like in seconds they were on to me.

Like others have said, this is 35km from Hokitika so a decent drive. For some reason my hostel convinced me it's a good cycle ride... Me being an idiot hired a shoddy bike and undertook a 70km round trip. Never again. Perhaps on a decent road bike, but not on a hostel mountain bike. Obviously me cycling has no bearing on how good the gorge was. The scenery is nice etc but it's not worth the bike ride IMHO. At least I earned a beer that night.

Long drive through beautiful west coast country. Seems they recently added an overflow car park. Nice short bush walk, well made and maintained. Stunning views across during the walk. Nice little hanging bridge. Then, sandflies. Everywhere, haha! Make sure to spray repellent! Due to recent weather the water had more of a creamy muddy look rather than the turquoise I have seen in photos. But still a beautiful place all the same.
