Owner description: Hidden away upstairs in the heart of Courtenay Place sits The Library. Fun and frivilous cocktails, exquisite and obscure wines, delicious desserts, exceptional cheese and scrumptious savoury snacks make this a great place to meet before or after a show. The Library also has live music every Tuesday and Friday evening.

Sometimes you just need a fancy cocktail. After drinking beers for days, I wanted something different, so my friend Shea entertained my notion to go get an Old Fashioned at the Library while we were in Wellington. Cool speakeasy-esque entrance up a couple flights of stairs. The host said we could go to the bar while we waited for a table. A table wasn't needed, but we ended up taking it anyway just to enjoy the atmosphere a bit. Old fashioned was great, though there was a bit of confusion at the bar when we ordered and paid but never got our drinks. We sorted it out though, and Shea had some drink envy in the process as our neighbor got some sort of toasted marshmallow drink. They definitely have their cocktail game on point here, though you're definitely paying for it.

Climbing the staircase to this hideaway tucked into city life at the corner of Tory & Courtney makes me think of one of those 1920's speakeasies. In lieu of a sign on the interior door one flight up you'll find only pictures of books to clue you in that "this is it." At street level, it's easy to walk by. Look up for an unobtrusive overhead sign on Courtney Place between the waffle shop and the burger joint at the corner of Tory St.

The Library can be a crowded, lively place, especially on weekends. But come early, within an hour or so of opening (5 PM weekdays, 4 PM weekends), and you'll find a quiet haven, the perfect place to relax with good food and drink after a long workday or workweek. There's a wonderful playlist, too - coolly sophisticated, with nothing cookie-cutter about it. Enjoy listening with a glass of wine or a cocktail, while contemplating the menu. It's a good one: very appealing and well-suited to the friendly yet stylish ambience.

For us, the perfect Friday evening is to wind down with a couple of glasses of Cambridge Road "Papillon" Rosé from Martinborough and a cheeseboard with 3 different cheeses we select from a very impressive list of 5. Every one is spectacular, and each has its own accompaniment. So, if you order the Fourme d'Ambert bleu, you'll get some tasty gingerbread with slices of black mission figs. And if you order the Cwmglyn raw farmhouse cheddar, you'll be treated to some rosemary lavosh with spiced pepper jelly. Whatever you select will melt in your mouth. It's a lovely plate, and, for what you get, reasonably priced at NZ$30.

The wine list is also carefully selected and includes unusual or uncommon offerings, most in the range of NZ$11-14 per glass, but there are also "fine and rare" wines that run higher. All are very well-described, so that you will know what you are getting for what you pay, whether by the glass or the bottle.

The cocktails available here are plentiful and imaginative, especially those in the "luxury" category. I have to confess that I have never had one, but I do enjoy reading about them on the drinks menu. When I finally get around to sampling something, it will definitely be the one called "How I Met Your Father," described as "Vodka soaked strawberries & rhubarb bitters topped with sparkling wine & a touch of lavender sugar."

It's a fun place, relaxing or invigorating depending on the hour and the day. Highly recommend you give it a try.

Cool place with lots of different kinds of seating - tables with chairs, sofas, booths, etc. Good vide and great 'hangout' location for some drinks with friends.

Good cocktail menu, and on Wednesdays many of them are 2 for 1!
