I had the buffet for dinner tonight. Roast pork was cooked perfectly, with crackling and apple sauce. The desert options were yummy yum yum! I was advised at reception to arrive prior to the tour groups to avoid the queue, which was a great tip. Very happy customer :)

I wouldn’t recommend dining here. They are insanely overpriced and the food was plain and underwhelming. I got the rib eye steak priced at $49. That cut of steak was not rib eye but more scotch fillet, it came with a blob of garlic butter on top, lousy fries and plain garden salad consisting of mesclun lettuce, few cherry tomatoes and balsamic dressing. I ordered my kids the fisherman’s basket $40 to receive overcooked crumbed seafood and fries. For dessert my kids had a bowl of ice cream each priced at $15 per bowl and all it was was 6 small scoops of ice cream nothing else. The worse dining ever! Very appalling I would expect better from a top tourism place.

Plenty of choice for breakfast, which was still changed around as in cooked breakfast, available one day spaghetti, then baked beans, the lambs fry. And beaut pancakes and apricot pastries

Dr52 and I had dinner at this restaurant tonight, although we weren't guests at the Kingsgate Hotel. We were made to feel welcome the moment we arrived by Kyla. We were a little dismayed at the menu offerings which were pretty standard bar food offerings, but there was a vegetarian burger on offer, with shoe-string fries. There was a vegan option for this burger. It came with a very generous side of fries. The burger sauce was made by the chef using vegan mayo, there was vegan cheese on the burger and two vegan patties. It was delicious. So, while it wasn't haute cuisine, it was perfectly acceptable. The service was fast and friendly. The view is across the bay looking towards Russell and spectacular. A good choice for families.

McKenzie's Restaurant & Bar is located on the 1st floor of the Kingsgate Autolodge, just across the street from the beach. The views from the restaurant across to the islands in the bay is lovely. The glass doors at the front fold back giving access to the breeze on a warm summers evening. We had dinner and breakfast here; both were buffet affairs and very good. An A la carte menu is also available. Dinner included a roast of the day but start with the salad cart; there were two other hot dishes to choose from or have them all! The breakfast option is hot cooked food or the continental; the hot option includes the continental as well. Staff were friendly. helpful and efficient. The Bar had a good selection of wines from several areas of New Zealand and also local beers - mostly bottled, although there were a couple on tap.
