Not much on offer around the area and not high standard, more kiwi - casual as can be, but we had a quiet room, and not very busy. But only one person who covered reception, serving in the bar, taking orders and serving locals in the off licence! The food was okay and the location is majestic. Huge room for improvement, and it could turn into a diamond.

Our Standard Queen room left a lot to be desired. The mouldy smell when we opened the door was dreadful and if accomodation hadn’t been so limited on the coast, we would have departed. This is of particular concern for those of us with lung problems. The room had not been dusted for quite some time, no milk in fridge (said fridge was in danger of wobbling off the cabinet it was sitting on), no windows that opened other than a couple of tiny skylights at the top. TV was tiny and no WiFi unless you paid a gold coin. This is the only motel in NZ that we have encountered that charges for WiFi!! The only saving grace was that the food in the restaurant was very good.

When you visit Hicks Bay it is like stepping back in time. Everyone is so laid back, taking life easy and happy to be living where they are. The Motel is just great for visiting this area and was one of the highlights of our 12 day trip around the North Island. We were 5 couples travelling on motorbikes and thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the motel served by our lovely waitress. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and the views were magnificent from our little landing. The walk down to the beach was well worth the slog and the “glow worm grotto” was a delightful bonus.

Not our first visit though will be our last.
Self contained timber unit as previously used but desired silence disrupted by neighbours until early hours. Loud voices , crying baby,Smoke drifting across ....and though advised these low life were tourists it didn't appear to be the case. Not sure if could be used as emergency accommodation?
Ironically in such a quiet location I needed ear plugs to sleep. Broken window and lamp not working paint accurate picture of neglect.Cleanliness not priority.
Meal ok in restaurant. Pool clean. Shame it has gone downhill. View is a delight but not enough to get me back again.

Left Tauranga on motorbikes and found HICKS Bay Motel, perfect stop to spend first night on way to Gisborne. Having a restaurant there was very handy. Could drink and no driving. Rooms older but clean and everything we needed. Staff friendly.

Room Tip: Very quiet motel but nice to to be way down the grassed area,so peaceful.
