Wow! The Waitakere ranges were beautiful, we spent 4 hours hiking around the range, with multiple walks it was the perfect place to visit for the day!

The ranges are beautiful but it is important to know that because of kauri dieback, most trails are now closed and could be closed for the next 50 years. The Arataki visitor centre says that the 250km of trails have now been reduced to 20km, so find out in advance if any walks you want to do are possible

The Arataki Visitors centre is a must first stop! Very interesting and informative exhibitions inside. They also have some great viewing areas outside (getting a photo with the giant picture frame is a must do as well). The staff are lovely and will help anyway they can.
We then drove down to Piha (make sure you stop at the lookout on Piha road - amazing views over Piha beach and Lion rock). Piha is a lovely area, scenic beach nice cafes etc. Very busy in summer though.
Don't neglect to take a detour to Karekare. Absolutely breathtaking. Karekere beach, even in summer, can make you feel like you are at the end of the world. Wild, ruggered, beautiful black sanded beach. To get there you can either wade through a knee deep stream next to the Surf Club, or take a longer route through the dunes.
To access Karekare falls you need to walk up the road from the beach carpark and walk down short, steep track. Another beautiful, scenic area. If the weather is nice you could go for a swim, or just sit and take in the wonderful falls.

The Arataki visitors centre is wonderful. It has an amazing view out over the Manukau and the Ranges. They have exhibitions to view and information about creatures that live in the area. Sadly now that many of the tracks have been closed because of Kauri dieback the Ranges can't be explored extensively but there are a few tracks with no Kauri which are still open. The Centre has maps and information on where visitors can go, including the nearby beaches.
