The visitor center has great vistas. Took a couple short walks. Interpretive exhibits are well done. Enjoyed the variation in foliage.

Waitakere Ranges is a fairly nice park with some good waterfall hikes, plus Lion Rock and the nearby Piha Beach are visually stunning. We stayed in the area for one night which was unnecessary, a day trip from Auckland would have been sufficient.

The Waitakere Ranges are Auckland's most accessible and precious forest. The ranges are home to many native birds and trees, as well as spectacular waterfalls. They are obviously well worth a visit. However, the forest is in crisis. The Kauri tree - a forest giant native to the north east of New Zealand - is suffering from a disease called Kauri dieback disease. To this date ecologists have been unsuccessful in understanding how the disease works, and have also been unsuccessful in preventing the spread of the disease. Over the past 5 years, the disease has spread from 8% to 19% of Kauri trees in the forest, with the disease concentrated around the walkways. The disease kills all infected trees, can be spread by a pinhead of soil. Maori elders have placed a Rahui on the Waitakere ranges. This is an ancient Maori term that bans people form entering the park, designed to protect the precious resource. In Maoridom, breaking this Rahui would result in serious consequences. The Auckland Council have been slow to act on this issue (idiots), but have voted in favour of closing the ranges which will take effect on 1 May 2018. Please do not enter the walking tracks, but if you must then clean your shoes THOROUGHLY with the solutions and brushes provided at the beginning of the tracks. Often tourists do not do this. There are roads going through the ranges with lookouts, and Piha and Karekare beach can provide the stunning views without risk to our Kauri trees.
