Description: Makan is an Indonesian restaurant in the heart of Melbourne CBD by Tasia & Gracia Seger, the winner of television cooking show My Kitchen Rules 2016.The word Makan in Indonesian simply means eat. It's also used as a salutation or invitation to eat. Makan celebrates the different elements Indonesian cuisine; a fusion of vibrant, colourful ingredients, intensely flavoured dishes, and the people who come together and share it. With a warm ambiance creating an intimate retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD, Makan is an exciting discovery of tempting flavours and a contemporary take on authentic dishes.

I brought my partner and her parents to Makan as I was hyping Indonesian cuisine to them for weeks. My colleague also recommended the restaurant and the reviews and pictures looked pretty good. I was excited. It was expensive, but I didn't care if the food was good.

As an Indonesian, I can definitively say that this is NOT Indonesian cuisine. I get it's supposed to be Western fusion, but a deconstructed tiny portion of pre-mixed Gado Gado served on a Perilla leaf is as far from authentic Gado Gado as you can get. The "satay" was essentially BBQ chicken skewers, and had no charr or fat on it. You could serve that to me in a Texas Roadhouse and I wouldn't know the difference without the peanut sauce. The sambal balado was not spicy at all and tasted more like salsa. It was watery. There was no kick and barely any acidity to it.

The only reason I'm not giving this a one star was the staff. They were very polite and helpful. I also liked the soft shell crab buns and wagyu rendang, and these were a great example of how fusion could work well when flavours complement.

The rest of the dishes we ordered - the cabbage, the octopus - were all forgettable.

I have never written a review before, but that's how disappointed I am right now.

Tucked away in the foyer of a large corporate building, was an unlikely venue for a great restaurant but great it was! Fantastic Indonesian food, we had King fish, chicken satays (awesome), nasi goreng and soft shell crab buns followed by an outstanding chocolate coffee dessert. Service was friendly and efficient. Definitely be back and reasonably priced. Go!

Ordered several entrees, grilled chicken wings, fried chicken ribs, and soft crab buns. All were excellent. For the mains we had a beef Rendang and a Nasi Goring. Beef Rendang was also excellent. A healthy serving of beef, well cooked and spicy and a bowl of rice. The Nasi Goring was very disappointing. Certainly not traditional. Says on the menu it comes with egg, but no egg on top like a traditional one. And certainly not spicy. The rice, supposed to be the hero of the dish, was overtaken by heaps of cabbage. And the chicken required a microscope. Otherwise, service was good and fast. Place was full. Music was not from Indonesia.
It's a little hard to find and not on Collins St. You have to enter down a dingy laneway from little Collins St

Went here for dinner with work colleagues and it was fantastic. The food was amazing. Fast and friendly service, we walked in without a booking. The food was delicious, we tried entrees and mains and every dish that came out was fantastic. hard to choose a favourite but amongst the highlights were the Pork Belly skewers, the char grilled corn, chicken ibs and the nasi goreng. So tasty, fresh, great variety on the menu, they do like chilli, so you may need to ask for less spicy if you aren't a chilli fan, but so worth the visit,

We are visiting Melbourne and my sister insisted that we try this Restaurant for Indonesian food since I love Asian cuisine. Since we had 10 people we could not physically go to the restaurant for a policy says over 8 pax NEED to order a SET MENU this is rather disappointing so we decided we will order online and collect food (Since they do not have delivery service, rather disappointing too)
We ordered few dishes costing over $300 . brought home (1/2 Drive to home) I opened the boxes just to try before sitting down for dinner. ALAS, the food- meats were ICY cold and rice was just LUKE warm, taste VERY disappointing NO FLAVOUR or SALT, Just some tasteless sauce brushed over and meats were so bland I felt sick .
Overall VERY BAD and Disappointed, will NOT RECOMEND THIS place so called MAKAN A highly rated restaurant for food.
