Bad room service

Review of The Smith Hotel
1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 31, 2024
Carpet in rooms stained, musty smell, terrible housekeeping room was never cleaned, sheets weren’t changed, complained and were moved to a better room, which looked out at a brick wall, there was a leak from the air conditioner? just outside the bathroom door which you had to walk though to access the bathroom which was not a pleasant experience with bare feet,we didn’t complain as we couldn’t be bothered moving our belongings again, breakfast which we paid for wasn’t available until 7.00 am which is too late in a tourist city as most people go on all day tours which start at 7.00,one morning we got a cereal pack, next time were told nothing available,so had to go to supermarket. Beds were very comfortable, some staff members were nice and helpful others made you feel like you were a nuisance. Stay somewhere else!

Room Tip: No early breakfast,go to the supermarket the night before

Dear allansH1723NS,

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We are sincerely sorry to hear about your disappointing experience, and we apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay.

Please rest assured that we are addressing the cleanliness concerns, including the stained carpets and musty smell, as well as the housekeeping and maintenance issues you raised. The air conditioning leak and the room change were certainly not up to our usual standards, and we regret that it impacted your comfort. We also understand your frustration with the breakfast hours and availability, and we will review our breakfast service to ensure it better meets the needs of our guests, especially those heading out early for tours.

We're glad to hear you found the beds comfortable, and we appreciate your kind words about some of our staff members. However, we are sorry that your interactions with others did not reflect the service we aim to provide. We will continue to work on improving our guest experience and service consistency.

Your feedback is invaluable in helping us make necessary improvements, and we truly appreciate you bringing these issues to our attention. We hope you’ll consider giving us another opportunity to provide a better stay in the future.

Kind regards,

Sanjaya Karunathilake

The house keeping was bad. The bathrooms had mould, there was a leak in our second room. The breakfast area wasn’t air conditioned. Both rooms had terrible views. When we complained about house keeping in first room, we were moved to room that had a leak outside the bathroom which you had to walk through.

Room tip: Don’t go there.

We found it very central to the Darwin Waterfront, Esplanade, Crocosaurus cove and Shopping centre, to which we could walk up to in a few minutes. Surroundings were quiet though it was in the CBD. H on Smith Hotel was comfortable with spacious rooms and we were provided with other amenities. They greeted us with a beautiful card with an aboriginal painting and a milk chocolate in the shape of a Crocodile which happened be of very high quality. Full breakfast layout at D bar was vivid and was to our satisfaction. We had the opportunity of selecting from an array of coffee flavours. We enjoyed their lemon infused cool water that was available adlib and that was an appropriate drink that we appreciated after our walks in the warm weather.

Dear 307kamalp,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the convenient location of The Smith Hotel and that you found our surroundings peaceful despite being in the CBD. It’s fantastic to know that the spacious rooms and amenities met your expectations.

We’re delighted that you appreciated the personal touch of the card and Crocodile-shaped chocolate, and that our breakfast spread and coffee selection hit the mark. It’s great to hear you enjoyed the lemon-infused cool water too—it’s perfect for refreshing after a day of exploring!

Thank you again for your kind words. We hope to welcome you back on your next visit to Darwin!

Kind regards,

The Smith Team

Didn’t get past the initial phone call to make my reservation. I asked to book in for the Kings Birthday long weekend in June. English was clearly not a first language. Then I had to explain what the king’s birthday long weekend was and they didn’t even know Australia had a king ! I got so frustrated that I took my business elsewhere.

Room tip: Find staff who can speak English and know what country they are in

Room was comfortable and clean for my two night stay.
Hotel restaurant was under renovations, of which I was totally unaware. I felt most uncomfortable whilst trying to eat with workman all around me, and the food was just edible. Staff were friendly, however I chose not to eat thereafter.

It's currently being renovated, so there are a few oddities. Pictures of the breakfast buffet shows a full regular stocked dining room. Our experience has been that you can have a continental breakfast or order a cooked item off of a menu of 6 items and help yourself to fruit, coffee, yogurt and other cold items. It's all been tasty but at times they've been out of things and made odd substitutions...ice cream instead of whipped cream on the waffle? The building is nice, clean, but it appears that staffing is low. Communication is tricky. I'm not sure who this hotel is marketed for but English is not any employee's first language. Rooms are a nice size and have a small fridge, electric kettle, instant coffee and a few hot teas. I wouldn't stay here again until the neighborhood and hotel are finished. There are renovations and new buildings going up all around and in the hotel.

Room tip: Location is good- near the grocery, a couple of restaurants, the hop on hop off bus and Crocasaures Cove. Several blocks to the ocean.
