We had a week here & the location could not be beaten, however the minimalist artsy rooms & furniture were responsible for a week of about 4 hours a night where our bed was so minimalist it was like a prison bed! The room was so sparse, no mirror, no cushions, no outdoor space, the bar was dry & never manned, breakfast was awful again minimalist, it stated that it ran from07.30, but when we arrived most mornings at 8 there was no coffee, toasters not plugged in & the waiter was very unfriendly, if it hadn't been for the pool we would of checked out early & checked in at one of the better hotels down on the beach, I have stayed at The Four Seasons around the world & The Shangri-La hotels for the same money so this place needs to get its act together & look at comfort & the basics rather than art & over £220 per night! What a waste of money, but more importantly a week of our previous leave, no tea or coffe in the room, I mean.. come on? The noisiest AC we have ever come across & kids slamming doors late a night too, went home drained & glad to be home!

Room Tip: Too much money & zero comforts!

Although we were a bit disappointed with the car-park view from our room (admittedly we only went for the standard double room, but still...), everything else about our stay here was excellent. A simply amazing spot, great facilities (pool, tennis court, bocce pit), probably the best 4-star breakfast I've come across, a great restaurant and art gallery, with amazing views accentuating the experience. The hotel staff was great, prices fairly reasonable and lots of local gems nearby. Get down to Sirolo if you visit and take the opportunity to rent a boat down at one of the local beaches and take a cruise up the coast to stop off at some remote beaches. There's also a great walk down to a beach at the foot of the mountains, a serious hike back up the hill, but well worth it! Wifi was a bit patchy, which was annoying, but given this is a place best enjoyed disconnected from the rest of the world, I can't say it dramatically hindered the experience. Thanks, Hotel Emilia, hope to come back some day :)

Room Tip: Go beyond the standard rooms, unless you're content with a view of the car park!

I spent 5 days at the hotel changing two rooms: a 'standard' one and a 'comfort sea view', and I tried the restaurant as well. All in all, I do agree with the opinion of many other customers: the location of the hotel is extraordinary (on the summit of the rocks facing the enchanting Portonovo bay), breakfast in the nicely kept and peaceful garden facing the blue horizon and the sea is lovely, the staff is kind and attentive, yet this is not enough to justify the exorbitant prices requested by the house.
Going into detail:
- the standard room (facing the car parking) simply looks like an hospital room. Furniture at the minimum (nowhere to place suitcases, no drawers or shelves, safe and minibar inside the closet). A small tv on a corner, a small garden table with two orange plastic chairs, a dull bed (Ikea?!) surrounded by empty white painted walls, a badly cleaned balcony with an ashtray laying on the floor, make for a truly depressing atmosphere. Avoid it!!!
- My 'comfort sea view' room was at ground floor, on the side of the hotel, opening directly on the garden. It was more wellcoming and comfortable than the first one (there were drawers and a little more gentle furniture), yet it was very small (around 14sqm, surely less than the minimum 15sqm requested to a 4 stars hotel), noisy (there's a rotor/flush sound coming from a hatch on the ouside wall), with little privacy. The mattress sinks in the middle and, apparently, the bath exhaust is not working.
- The hotel structure dates back to the '70: it needs restoring and some architect intervention: old and dull resin floors in the corridors give an hospital look, old tile floors around, old swimming pool construction. Shabby chic external furniture can't hide the worn reality and give a sense of pretentius instead.
- The restaurant proves to be pretentious as well: quite expensive and apparently refined, it supplies instead a slow service and flavourless dishes (seafood spaghetti)
- The hotel is family run, the owner is keen on arts and organizes music concerts, gourmet nights and art exhibitions all open to outer local customers. Unfortunately the organisations of such events are intrusive and annoying all through the day, and fill with people the limited common area of the garden during the night.
- the hotel is not on the seaside: you need a car to reach it.
Considering the shortcomings of the hotel, the top price requested (for a simple B&B service) is unreasonable and I give 2 stars to this structure.

Room Tip: Avoid standard rooms

We stayed here for six days in July. The hotel has a very relaxed, sophisticated vibe. Rooms are good but basic. We didn't have a car - first time we have tried Italy without one - but it was broadly ok. The hotel is a bit isolated but there is a shuttle service during the day to Portonovo and a public bus passes right by the front entrance for Ancona. Hotel staff were very helpful in providing information. The only drawback is evenings when public transport stops. We ate twice in nearby Poggio but it is not an easy walk and a taxi from Ancona costs €30 so we only did that once.

Two small grumbles. The food is excellent but the menu is limited and there are no daily specials to provide variety. We were bored of the lunch menu by the end of the week. And the pillows feel like they are filled with concrete. Otherwise a perfect stay. Not many places have violinists playing under trees or an inhouse accordion player! We loved them both.

Thanks.
