I cannot remember in all my trips a hotel that did not meet any of my needs. From stuffy old decorated rooms without functioning air conditioning (staff finally able to fix the second day), to mold throughout the bathroom. It was impossible to shower without completely soaking everything in the bathroom. Furniture all looked homemade in the ancient past. Furthermore, while the location overlooking the lake is superb, there is nothing in close proximity. Walking for 20 to 25 minutes one can find stores but you travel along a very busy road with only a narrow pathway. Certainly not good for seniors. Elevators small and rickety only able to accommodate 4 persons at a time.
Staff are nice and the food was fine. Wouldn't recommend. Definitely not renovated and not a 4 star as advertised.

Great Location - the rest terrible. Reservations would not allow modifications. Registration could not find room key. Dirty. Staff walks in elevator in front of guests. Dirty. Maid knocks on door at 9.15. Dirty. Old and Dirty. Bad manners. Breakfast horrible. NEVER again, NEVER recommend. Noisy chiller outside room.

Room tip: Never reserve in this hotel

The views from the front of the hotel are beautiful, so get a room with a lake view. The rooms at the back are very noisy by the looks of it as there is an extractor. Our room was nicely furnished but little details let it down; broken curtains, broken chair, dodgy kettle. We managed to get the AC working but it could have been better. Our bathroom had not be refurbished but for us that wasn’t a problem. Our shower cubicle did not drain well and when we came back from a day out the water sometimes took a while to come through fresh. There was at times an odd smell coming from the drains. It seems that the hotel just needs a bit more TLC in terms of maintenance and cleaning. The pool has amazing views and is very relaxing but it could do with a clean. There’s also a pool bar and lovely gardens to sit and relax in. We ate in the restaurant once and it was very nice- we both had pizzas which were delicious. Overall the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed breakfast; there was a large range of savoury and sweet options.
Airport Transfer: We travelled from Milan Malpensa Airport by bus (number 35) bustop 6 Terminal 1. You have to prebook online for this service on the Alibis website. It costs €12 each and takes around 50 mins to arrive in Belgirate. The bus drops you near the church and it’s a 5 min walk to the hotel.
Eating in Belgirate: We ate in Anelli restaurant near the Church several times and enjoyed paninis, salads and meat/cheese boards and lovely wine and beers. There’s a small terrace next to the lake front too. The owner and waiters were all very friendly and told us about the typical cheese and meats of the area. We also went to La Spiaggeta which is past Hotel Milano and about 10 mins from hotel Villa Carlotta. They serve salads, pizzas and panini at an affordable price. There’s a relaxing lounge/ terrace area overlooking the lake and you can also rent a deckchair if you want to sunbathe and swim in the lake.
Exploring the area: The church at the top of Belgirate is beautiful and has spectacular views of the lake and surrounding areas- it’s well worth the climb. Charlie Brown for an ice cream is a must but closed Thursdays! We found that there was much more to do in Stresa which is just North of Belgirate, about 10 mins by car and 6 mins by train (€1.90). There’s only one train from Belgirate to Stresa in the morning and it’s at 9:09, you can by tickets onboard from a ticket officer. There’s lots of shops and restaurants in Stresa; we recommend eating in Ristorante Bar La Botte which serves typical Italian dishes. From Stresa you can catch boats to Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Isola Superiore dei pescatori, Pallanza Verbania, Intra, Baveno. We absolutely loved Isola Bella, Isola Madre and the gardens in Pallanza! Arona is also beautiful and has lots of shops and eateries. We recommend going to Ristorante Barcaiolo, which has midday set menus which are really affordable. The food
was delicious. We went to Milan one of the days and took a direct train from Stresa to Milano Centale (€17.50 each one way which took less than an hour. You can also take a stopping train from Stresa(€7) to Milan but it takes an hour and 10 mins. We recommend eating in Il Cestino; pizzas, pasta, meats, fish etc. Good price and good quality. The owner Alessandro was very friendly! Belgirate is a beautiful town and a very relaxing base to explore the West Bank of Lake Maggiore. If you don’t have a car it’s a bit difficult to explore the area but it’s not impossible. Villa Carlotta is a work in progress but definitely has some strong points in its favour. It’s a lot cheaper than hotels in Stresa and is actually a lot more relaxing position.

Great location but very poor rooms
Review of Hotel Villa Carlotta
Reviewed yesterday via mobile
The location is amazing but could not believe the quality of the rooms. Some of the rooms did not even have ac. They ran out of fans. I have not seem such poor bath rooms in a long time that had broken tiles( see pictures). The hotel bordered on safety issues with fresh paint on carpet. Odd smell in hallways etc.

I also want to call out Trafalgar’s CostSavers program. This was part of their itinerary and they took zero responsibility for putting in this hotel. If you are in this tour watch out.

The hotel staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The room we paid for was a deluxe and was on the front corner of the building with lovely views across the lake. It clearly had been recently refurbished and the room was fresh, bright, clean and a good size. The ensuite shower room was a good size, clean, toiletries refreshed each day, clean towels every two days without requesting and bed linen changed after three nights. The staff very quickly provided us with extra pillows.
Despite being on the main road the windows, shutters and curtains kept the noise to a minimal and did not wake us. The air con was very efficient and quiet.
The breakfast had a variety of foods based on a continental style. There were at least 6 to 8 fresh fruits to help yourself to, meats, cheeses and lovely brown and nutty breads as well as bread rolls and the white bread for toasting. The scrambled egg was excellent (we suspected it had cream in it which I resist at home), bacon not so good as too fatty for us, however eggs there to boil to your own taste. A variety of cakes, yogurts, coffees and teas etc made for a more than adequate selection and a hearty breakfast. The staff were very helpful and replenished the food selections quickly.
The swimming pool was a pleasant extra with fabulous views across the lake although care was needed up the path to it. The hotel is well positioned for the ferries, bus stops and train station. Belgirate is a quiet small resort however it’s easy to walk to Lesa or catch transport to the much busier Stresa. The hotel was easily accessed from Malpensa airport as the Alibus actually drops off and picks up from the front door.
