Do your homework about St Julians

Review of Vivaldi Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 26, 2024
Have just returned from Vivaldi. On the whole hotel was OK. Things that we liked: Great - room size, air con, bed, tea/coffee making, cleaning, tv channels, lifts fast, breakfast ok, evening meal value for money even if dining area lacks atmosphere, roof top small but kept clean and tidy and pool lovely temperature. So that's good. Things for improvement: no balcony furniture to enjoy the sea view, mixed information from reception regarding extending check out and no flex at all, evening bar area appears to have been subbed out so is a shish bar, gym equipment requires electric and maintenance, reception furniture tired, pool bar area needs restocking (no ice cream, lacking some drinks, etc) and whilst staff efficient could they smile. Things to know about St Julian... little bit run down, alot of building work but closed down hotel next door. Clearly not to do with hotel. No clean beach or shoreline bathing area near (walk to St G about 1 mile). On the whole we enjoyed, but some things a surprise!

Room Tip: Check out St Julians that it's what you want.

On arrival late evening I gave my and companions details to Reception for the two rooms we'd booked through On The Beach. The hotel reception explained that their system showed only one room booked. Fortunately i had hard copied all the booking information which i produced to the Night Manager who accepted that I had lndeed booked (and paid for) 2 rooms. However he explained that the hotel was tied by what was shown on the in house system but that as a courtesy he would allow us to occupy 2 rooms for a day or 2 whilst this was sorted out. This sad saga was still ongoing 3 days later ( the booking apparently took place through a number of agents both local and international) with the threat of expulsion - for one of us - repeated. In the end the hotel accepted the booking but only after i'd spent half a day speaking to both On The Beach and their Spanish booking agents. As I tried to explain to the Night Manager this is my holiday but your job !

On my return to the UK i wrote a letter of complaint sent by recorded delivery followed up by several chasing e-mails. To date i have not even had the courtesy of a reply !

For completeness I should say that I liked the hotel, although some of the advertised facilities were closed at the time.

Graham

The positive note: the room had been nicely renewed and refurnished.

apart from that, the hotel is a noise HELL of drunk partying youngsters, partying and running in and out all night ... as the nice new doors close with a loud SLAM, echoing through the corridoors.
Dont bother calling the front desk, they rarely answer, so you'll have to go down there and m,aybe, they will send up "security" within the next half hour or so.
so NO continuous sleep between 22 to 04.

If you're unfortunate enough to be on 6th floor, you'll have automatic wake-up at 0600, when the staff start kicking and throwing parasol feet and deck chairs around right above your ceiling.
You could go to the big balcony to watch the sunrise, but, theres no furniture but its littered with cigarette butts and trash from the pool deck, and unfortunately not on the cleaning roster.

The water pressure on the 6th is so low, that taking a shower is a bit of a challenge too.

2 fire alarms in 11 days, both in the middle of the night, and both times, the front desk staff were absolutely clueless, so didnt manage the situation, nor did they properly inform, but directly prompted, the answe was "its probably someone smoking in their room" ... lets hope, there is never a real fire.

The staff, apart from the excellent pool bartenders, are slow, apathetic and uninterested.

How this hotel maintains 4 stars is a mystery to me.

Room tip: Stay away ... chose one of the actual 3 or 4 start hotels in the area.

Location is great for poker players, casino next door (Dragonara) and two others short walk away.
Room was very nice, clean, large, balcony huge, no furniture on the balcony though which seemed strange.
Roof top pool was nice, with access to loungers and umbrellas. You can hire a towel and get your money back upon return so you don’t need a beach towel. The tiles around the pool could do with a jet wash, but an easy fix.
Water left in the room each day, tea and coffee facilities in the room which was a great touch. Breakfast was lovely , lots to choose from and freshly squeezed orange juice also, plus coffee machines.
Really enjoyed our stay.
The local beach St George’s Bay is a 4 minute walk away. The beach unfortunately is littered with coverage butts which ruins the experience slightly, the water was nice, calm and there was plenty of local choice for food. I’d highly recommend eeet well near the beach, fantastic salads.

The room was large with a sofa, chair, desk and two 3ft single beds. Elegant decor and cleaned every day. Very pleased that we had tea, coffee making facilities and a decent hairdryer. The staff were friendly and helpful. The swimming pool was refreshing, especially as the temperatures were in the 30s. Overall we couldn't fault this hotel.

Room tip: The pool gets busy during the day, so be sure to get a sunbed and also an umbrella as early as possible.
