Approaching Travnik from the south, the first thing you see is the fort perched on the mountain side above the old town. It is well worth a visit, not least for the view of Travnik from the ramparts. Anyone visiting this town is missing half the experience, however, if they do not first read Ivo Andric's book The Day of the Consuls about a time in the early 19th century when a French and Austrian consul served in Travnik alongside the Turkish viziers. Andric, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1961, was born in Travnik although of Croat heritage. The house where that took place is now a museum. Bang in the centre, it is alao well worth a visit.

Travnik's largely Ottoman fortress is similar to others in the country but well maintained with many intact buildings, mosque, ethnographic museum with some interesting displays of local traditional life and culture, and a nice craft centre with locals making and selling traditional crafts, including woven goods and pottery. It has great views of the town and valley.

We were staying in Hvar town and took the 30 min/27Kn to Stari Grad. It’s a smaller more sedate version of Hvar located at the head of a huge inlet or neutral harbour.

A vert attractive town and it was great exploring the alley ways of the old town. And check out the bakery in the main square - yummy fare.

It is nice town but be careful with buying things from this place, there are cheaters around: We were a bit disappointed not because of the town,it is quite beautiful but because we are cheated by the locals..Between Travnik and Jajce, we bought 2 kg's of honey, when we came home we saw it is sugar with food coloring..I wrote right away to the tourist info e mails from Travnik and Jajce giving the coordinates of this cheater, both tourist offices didnt even bother to write us one sentence..I would never visit and would not recommend anyone..They have to get rid of their cheaters first..
