This is an abbey that inspired Umberto Eco in his book The Name of the Rose. The foundation of the abbey was set in 966. It is located on Mount Pirchiriano, on the south side of the Val di Susa overlooking the towns of Avigliana and Chiusa di San Michele.
In order to reach Sacra from Turin you need to the take a train from Porta Nuova Railway Station to the station San Ambrogio, a 30 minutes trip. In San Ambrogio you must go to the center at the Restaurant Cappucino and here you should ask for the taxi driver who goes up to the abbey.
There is a taxi driver that can take you up on a road of almost 17 km or/and bring you down from the abbey.
Or from Sant Ambrogio you can climb up by feet through the woods , a trip of aprox 2 hours, on a path with the sign "antica mullatiera".
Up from the abbey the view is breathless, you can see the Alps.

30 min drive from Turim, the church is a nice place to visit, beautiful view of the city and the mountains, you will park the car near the entrance and then walk about 10 min to church, so leave high heels behind!

I went to the Sacra di San Michele again about 10 years after my last visit, and I love it every time. It's such an unique and mystical place (even if you're not a believer!) that it's hard to describe it with words. It is absolutely a must-see if you are in the area, and frankly worth a detour.

This is a bit of a trek from the city center and driving in Turin was an ordeal, but it was worth the effort. This 10th century Abbey is magnificent. Perched on Mount Pirchiriano in the Val di Susa (Susa Valley) this is one of the sacred sites dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The views and Gothic and Romanesque architecture are breathtaking. Be prepared to climb steep stairs!

We hiked uphill to get to the place and it was SO worth it! The views are incredible and the monastery itself is daunting! Such amazing architecture and engineering with beautiful art and history. A must see if you’re in this area!
