We have been invited by our partners to have lunch in this lovely restaurant which I warmly recommend to anyone who passes by and want to spend a wonderful time with friends, colleagues, partners or family!

The open air museum in Molfsee/Kiel is rather big. There are all in all over 70 small and big buildings. The bigger ones are fully furnished and give the visitor the feeling of traveling through the time. You can see how people used to live and work only 100 years ago. It´s a perfect place for interested people.
The high number of buildings makes it hard and (later) also a bit boring to visit all of them. The only real attraction for young children is an old carousel and the museum train. Inside the open air museum you can just buy drinks and small snacks. A good restaurant you will find outside of the museum close to the parking area.

If you are cruising and stop in Kiel, there are few options really attractive, as the city itself contributes little or nothing to see. So once walking around the center, we set out to take the bus 501 to the Open Air Museum of Molfsee. In 15 minutes you stand at the door of entry park. The place is well worth seeing, shows a rebuilding of the old houses of the various craft guilds of the area (from farmers, whalers, typical Dutch windmills, etc ...). So with a budget of less than € 10 you input and take a bus ticket , you can saved € 50-60 offering boat tours for visiting us saw the same thing. In short, if you do stop in Kiel, go on your own, not worth booking excursions.

We found that the museum was very much all the same and became boring quickly. Also, even in the height of summer, many of the workshops were closed. The single kiosk in the centre of the park is the only place to get a drink or anything to eat so bring drinks with you or buy them at the entrance.

To be fair, I'm sure this is fascinating if you're from Schleswig-Holstein, but if not - it fails to grab your interest really. Although I did wake up when I got an electric shock trying to feed an apple to a donkey. On our tour they gave us some cheeses to taste. Two of them were rather challenging to say the least - don't even attempt it without a cast iron stomach. It was completely dead when we visited and would greatly benefit from having more animals and humans milling about and making it more alive.
