Owner description: Gruyères Castle has stood proudly atop a verdant hill in the heart of Switzerland since the 13th century. Surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Alpine foothills, the medieval fortress houses prestigious collections that bear witness to its long and rich history. The treasures to be found within its walls include the capes of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the intricate stained-glass windows dating from the Middle Ages; the frescoes commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime; paintings by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the troubadour decorations of the Salle des Chevaliers, created at Gruyères in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists. From its ramparts to its French-style gardens, from the guard room to its romantic salons, Gruyères Castle takes you on an adventure through eight centuries of art, history and legends.

d you are visiting this town, you must check the castle. It is fun to see how they use to decorate the rooms, to see the astonishing views, and to ponder about the lives of the people who once lived here. Recommend!

Lovely place to visit, and is surrounded by a beautiful small village. They showed us a history video at the beginning, and then we toured all over the castle.

Lot of history here. We took a paid tour that was 1.5 hr. Which was interesting but way too short to do the site justice. I would suggest if you take the tour go back and visit the pieces that were over looked. All in all I would visit again as it was enjoyable and had some very nice pieces of history.

Out of so many castles in the Alps region, Gruyeres Castle is definitely my favor one. Not only that the castle itself stands on a high ground, giving you a fantastic view of the surrounding, but also its lovely township around the castle. You can enjoy fine dining with local wine and cheese. You can also find artist market near the town center every weekend to appreciate the local art work. Parking is fairly easy at the bottom of the hills, allowing an easy access to Gruyeres by cars.
