The worst accommodation ever, shower was the worst, flooded the bathroom every day, shower base tiny, plug could not drain the water, shower curtain useless.
Court yards dirty, with rusty furniture, filthy sun lounger with no cover.
No staff in reception at all.
Food very poor, well below standard and mostly inedible
Bedroom very basic, like a bedroom in a nunnery.

Room tip: do not bother going to this hotel period

Hotel Villa Pina, the small and rustic hotel / restaurant between the hustle and bustle of the busy Sorrento and the laid back streets of Massa Lubrense, has been our little slice of Italian heaven for the past 10 years. Over those years we've visited 8 times and not once have we been disappointed and gone home unhappy.

Is the hotel the most modern? No
Is the food in the evening the best in world (for a Thomsons package traveller)? No
Is the hotel clean? Absolutely
Is the breakfast more choice than most half boards? Very much so

What you get is what you pay for. You try going out in Sorrento or anywhere else within a 20km radius and find place to eat a 3 course meal with wine of the quality Villa Pina provides for less than 75 euros. Can't be done!.

The views from the terrace on top are fantastic, olive and lemon groves and more besides. The breeze from the sea, the tang of the Mediterranean, the buzz of the Vespa's going by, a holiday is more than just the 4 walls you spend the sleeping hours within

We have come to know the owners and the staff there very well (language barrier not withstanding) and we look forward to seeing them each time we break out of Sorrento on the coach. We dress for dinner, not for showing off, but its just the done and respectful thing to do, and its appreciated by the owners. They have come to know us too (they believe I'm the mirror image of Rafa Benitez!).

The hotel will be going through a refurbishment over the winter and we can't wait to find out just how that turns out. We'll be going again, and again, and again.

I've just returned from a stay at the Villa Pina. We stayed on a half board basis for 1 week.

Now I think it's fair to say that with regards to this hotel: you get exactly what you pay for. We did not pay an extortionate amount considering the popularity, temperature and views.

However, do you not come to this hotel if you are hoping for any kind of luxury, as you will be disappointed. It's certainly nowhere near the 4 star it gets on here. The hotel is sold on the premise that you will dine in a Michelin starred restaurant. This is true and the guests that arrive to eat the a la carte menu will surely agree. We ate between 7 and 8pm and ate from a selection of 3 starters, 3 mains and a pudding trolley. This food was definitely not Michelin standard and neither was the service - in fact, I would be unhappy with it in a cheap chain restaurant back home. As a vegetarian (who emailed to alert the hotel to this prior to visiting and received no response!) I was very limited by options - on one occasion there was not a main option I could eat at all. The food was quite simple and I ate an awful lot of tomato and cheese pasta. Variety is not the spice of life here. My friend is a meat/fish eater and was not very impressed with the meat that came with the options she selected. The meat was dry/unseasoned and portion size not particularly large. You would not be horrendously disappointed with the hotel food had it not had such a reputation to live up to.

The dining area was nice - open and light - with views of the sea. These were stunning and you could glimpse the sunset as you ate. However, on a particularly busy evening for the 'paying' customers eating from the a la carte menu, all diners staying in the hotel across the street were relegated from the usual dining room to a dark and dingy 'in between' room. This was not particularly pleasant. At this point we did feel we were treated as the second class citizens of the restaurant.

The service was never excellent whilst being served in the bar or restaurant and on a couple of occasions it was actually appalling. My friend asked about the difference in the size of pudding between myself and her (the portion sizing was not uniformed at all) and the maitre d' responded that it was because I was 'big'. Certainly not what a size 10/12 25 year old wants to hear on a beach holiday!

Further to this, there was no mention of any nuts on the menu. My friend enquiried as to whether the chocolate eclair pudding she had been served contained nuts as she is allergic and the same maitre d' said 'I don't know I'm not the chef' whilst rolling his eyes. She asked if he could check and he threw his hands up in frustration as he went to ask the chef, clearly not understanding the gravity of the situation had she actually eaten the pudding! It DID have nuts in it and he soon came back with his tail between his legs.

Room wise, it's very basic but mostly clean. The towels are changed daily and beds are made up late morning. Our sheets were not changed at all during our stay. There was no information regarding fire escapes in our room and there was no 'do not disturb' sign. The rooms are quite dated, and perhaps haven't been updated since they opened, but we were not too fussed by the decor as we did not plan to spend a lot of time in the room. The shower was not great, set very low on the wall (not suitable for anyone over 5'5'') and the shower head was quite unclean, meaning the flow of water was stunted and the bathroom was flooded every time the shower was used.

The wifi connection is very poor and phone signal is not good up at the hotel but fine in Sorrento itself.

The roof space has amazing views of Sorrento and Capri and there is plenty of outdoor furniture should you wish to sit there. There are also 5 beds for any hoping to sunbathe. There is no pool but we didn't mind this as there are lots of lovely beaches nearby. (Just a note that use of beds on beaches and the marinas in Sorrento itself vary from €5 to €16 in the more modern beach decks/hotels)

The hotel is about 10/15 minutes away from the main part of Sorrento by bus. The EAV bus stops outside the hotel and is cheap to use, costing €1.70ish each way if you pay on board or €1.30 if you buy tickets in advance from the tobacconist shops in the centre. We collected a tourist information leaflet with times and for the daytime it's accurate - this is not the case for the evening though! The bus timetable says buses run much later than they do, which resulted in a €32 taxi home one evening so be prepared for this. The last one we saw pass was before 10.30pm.

Despite the disappointment we faced at our hotel (which was echoed by most of the other patrons) we did have a fantastic holiday, but I feel people should be prepared for what they will face when they arrive. Expect great things and you'll be disappointed.

The welcome meeting with Thomson was helpful and the tui reps do a tour around Sorrento which we found very helpful for navigating ourselves the rest of the week.
Communication after this point was not good however.

Our holiday was made by the wonderful Sorrento town. The streets have lots to offer and the place itself is very authentic, offering lots of small family run cafes and restaurants and some lovely shops. The streets are pedestrianised at night which adds to the whole experience. The views and walking routes are incredible - it's a truly stunning place to visit and we found a nice balance between stunning views and relaxing beach days as well as some days exploring the culture. The weather was also very good all week.

In essence, I would 100% recommend visiting Sorrento. Just don't stay here.
