I first set foot on Isola Del Giglio, as a three year old in 1965. I returned with my family ever year for the next 15 years, and then as a young adult. I learned my basic Italian here, as well as scuba diving, and the art of seduction. Giglio was the paradise of my youth. Returning after 28 years, I have found the island to be for the most part, in much better condition than I expected, and not at all ruined by the advance of mass tourism. Giglio Porto is super cute, full of bars and restaurants, for the most part extremely good. You can enjoy boat trips to rocks, beaches, including the caribbean white Le Cannelle, or take a trip the the saracen fortress on the top of the Island, known as the Castello. Beyond this, there are cool pine forests where trekkers can walk all across the wilder reaches of the small island. The sea is crystal clear, and the land is ruggedly beautiful. The holiday style is simple and easy going. If you do go, please respect it for this reason. Enjoy (but probably not in August) !
