Quintessential Castle of childhood dreams, the Donjon at Arques is a drawing come to life. Beautiful views out to the village and a good idea of the life in medieval times

I want to give this a 5 and my husband says give it a 3, so we're settling on 4!

Beautiful castle with just 2 places intact to explore. However, we were there for about an hour as the donjon (main tower) has 4 levels, and the other tower has one floor and a cellar. We did spend several minutes watching the bats in the ground floor of the donjon, too!

I would recommend coming here if you like castles, like history, know about the area or are interested in any of the above. It's good for children, too, as there's a good amount of space for them to play on the grass (we saw 2 little boys playing with some sticks).

This is a truly unique building, steeped in history going back to the cathar days. Beautifully restored too. Beware on the second floor, I have been here several times with different groups, absolutely convinced it is haunted.

A small Chateau of the Cathar era, the central keep of which is well preserved with little remaining of the outer walls. There is a museum but it was closed for our visit. The keep has 4 levels but nothing of interest presented therein. Pleasant enough and easy to visit but nothing spectacular. All descriptive materials around the castle are in French although a small pamphlet in english is provided. Visit just about possibly for disabled at ground level but no facilities provided. Entry is 5 Euro, 4 with a Cathar passport (2 Euro). Not that impressed, would not go out of way to visit, can see most of what there is from the outside. Could do better!
