Was in York Minster the previous day which is light & spectacular but swamped with tourists! By contrast, Durham Cathedral is magnificently gothic & gloomy, & was fairly quiet on a rainy Easter Monday. I bought the £1 guide and followed it happily for an hour-or-so. I wasn’t expecting the tomb of The Venerable Bede - historical bonus

Great experience of seeing the Durham Cathedral as well as seeing other sights. Couldn’t believe this was used in a Marvels film.

We were very luck in that our host is involved with the Cathedral as a volunteer. We had something of an insider view. The history of this building is amazing at it is clear that it has arisen from humble origins. Some fascinating window glazing, sculptures and we enjoyed a daily service provided largely for the benefit of school children.
The coffee shop and gift shop appeared large and welcoming.

We were lucky enough to be godparents to one of the Durham choristers. 5am service with a real family and welcoming feel.
